What to chamber the Oberndorf in?

I’m in the speed kills camp, more thinking 550grs at 2500ish. Will certainly play with some trail boss loads and 750s, and the classic 750gr / 2150fps load. May only try a couple of those loads twice, will plan to wear the GoPro on my head again for it but that’s a year away. Anticipating ripping the stock lengthwise several times and laminating it back together with epoxy on veneer layers, as I don’t trust the unsupported walnut to last long. If you need rifled 12 bore barrels I have a pair cheap.

I’m in the speed kills camp...

I think Ross Seyfried wrote about that quite a few years ago and specifically mentioned the .378 Weatherby with .300gr bullets at 3000 fps being a phenomenal killer on lions. One of my old "Cartridges of the World" has a .460 Wby load of 500gr bullet at 2700 fps.

I plan on pushing my 460weatherby at 2450fps with a 600gr bullet.. 500gr at 2700 seems pretty fast. Quite fast actually. I cant find any data showing those speeds.

It's in an old book. I did a quick search and found data showing 4350 + 500gr bullet for 2707 fps out of a 26" barrel. Apparently this used to be a factory load at one time.

Big guns rule the imagination. This one will settle for me once and for all if bore diameter means anything on bears. My strong suspicion is no, but with how cocksure I’ve been in saying so I better try up to .577. So far the most reliable bear dropper I’ve seen is 235gr .375 H&H, tied for the most impressive bear kill is .300 Ultra 180gr (Dogleg’s Grizzly). Least impressive dropping on the spot performance was from .38-55 and .45-70 hard cast on black bear.

I vote for the 318 Westley Richards, because I'm a total ###hole that knows that you sell your guns off semi-regularly. I'll play the long game and buy it off you for 60 cents on the dollar in a few years!

But that 375 H&H would also be pretty awesome. And I'd be less likely to try to poach it off you!

Hoyt made a similarly sagacious comment in a text message conversation not long ago. :d

10.75x68.
The short .404 that will do all that is needed. A romantic round that deserves a resurgence!

Nice call! I stumbled accross the 10.75x68 while researching old Mauser sporting rounds, it really had my attention, being quite easy to work in a Mauser. Will even fit in a x57 mag box. Avoided it only really on account of the .404/.424 bore. But it should remain on the strategic retreat list if the .577 is displeasing. Damn sensible cartridge in comparison.

If 404 Jeffery was on the list I would have picked that. I have one and like it alot. I choose 7mm rem mag. Plain jane yes, but a great round.

With .308 for scale, the new .577,
