The Savage 99 Thread!

Well, Maddog the site is a great idea. I find a hankerin for a partner for my 99c 308. Mebbe a 250 or a 300. Never seen one with a straight grip. Almost looks weird but still a lovely rifle. I will have to check with my buddy Twodogs and see if I can pry another out of his cold hands. This site is likely to be around for a while. Great pics. See if I can figure out how to get mine on. Guess I should be saving up for the April Kamloops show...

Well "Handsome is as handsom does" as they say in the Shire. I like the looks of my 99 in .300 savage and I like to clean it and "fondle" it in the off season. But mostly I like to hunt with it. I was deer hunting and saw some wolves who were also hunting deer. I did some fawn distress calls and these two wolves came running to me. I hit the farther one at about 80 yards and then killed the closer one at 40 yards. I had to get back on the far one and wittle him down before he got out of the cutblock. I needed all 6 rounds that the rifle held.

Have a 99 that came down the line from Grandpa .300 Savage S#436536 topped with an old Lyman 'All Weather Alaska' scope. It's taken more game that any other of my rifles combined :)

Grandpa used it for 'Bucky' in my avatar.

Does anyone manufacture aftermarket stocks for the 99's?I'm sure I was on a sight once that sold laminated stocks.

Ya, Boyds made the laminate stocks. Get ahold of RR here, Rich had a set made for an E of his but I think they cost some high dollars in the laminate.

Here's my 99-375, I took two deer with two shots with it this year. I owe 44Bore and Doug a big one on that gun.:)

how much does a 30 year old, apx 75% condition savage 99 in 308 go for?

Whatever the buyer is willing to pay.;) See them down in the EE for between $300-$600, some guys figure they're worth 6 for some reason.

Is it a pre-mil serial or a post mil?

Bogie, not sure what he means by that, a gun is a gun, I've never heard of any 99's beating up the brass.

Post Mil. Its the gun i used to shoot my first deer, and while i have no interest in it (other than i know it shoots well), my younger brother does, but is limited in how much he can afford. The gun is missing all (or nearly all) bluing on the action, lever, and trigger/gaurd/magazine box. Muzzle/barrel shows similar wear (although minimal scratches, just missing bluing mainly). Rifling is good, although there may be some pitting inside the grooves (but not on the lands), it was so hard to tell that i could just be imagining it. Wood is good, no real wear marks on it. I was thinking somewhere around 250-300$, does that sound reasonable?

as for eating up brass...no worries

If it was my younger brother and the gun was used as much as you said I'd most likely hand it over to him, but thats me. Ya, your guesstimate sounds pretty fair for the gun.

Here are a couple of my favourites, brush guns,

375 win (top) and 358 win (bottom), the big boys!

Love the shot of the barrel! Big hole!

Blair, stop being a wussy and take that 375 out.

I took mine out with me this year and took an 8 point buck and a doe with it. Low recoil and doesn't make as big of a hole as you think, all it is is a 38-55 with a wee bit more juice behind it.

Haha, Les, I still get a kick out of the corn feeder and the corn in the background!

Did you visit Lightfoot while you were in Texas or were you to far away from him?

You have a Stith mount on that R don't ya?

He was about 200 miles from me, hey, ain't no shame in my game, I'll be taking the oldest down there for her 1st Deer, when I'm doing real hunting I go to my Dad's in Michigan. I actually have to try there. :D Next time I head down though I'm gonna go see Mike. Les
