The Savage 99 Thread!

Well now I am confused . after reading this thread I got curious and went to savage99.com and punched my sreial number in to see what date my 99 is. It told me 1908. I didn't believe that so I started doing some more research and I now know that, I don't know nothin. I know 1908 is fishy as the 250-3000 wasn't introduced until 1915. after comparing it with the photo's here I think it is a 70's era saddle carbine but I thought that the newer savages had a 1in 10 twist rate in .250-3000 and mine is 1in 14. So my questions to the experts are did the 70's saddle carbines have the 1in 14 twist, and is the serial # located at the back bottom corner on the left side of the reciever.

This has made me want to learn some more about the 99's . does anyone have any recomendations of good books on the subject?

Thanks for the date of production of my rifle. Did Savage ever go to a 1in 10 twist in the .250-3000 . I thought mine was older because it had a 1in 14 twist.

Huh?

It shouldn't have a 1-14" twist if it's a 1972. Either that or whoever sold it to you had it rebarreled.

The 250-3000 had a 1-14" twist right up to 1960 or the one million serial number. Your's is an A series serial number so it should be a 1-10" twist. If the barrel has Westfield on the barrel it's a 1-10".

Gotta get a pic of my current Savage 99 in .308 Win... but here's the last one I had.......... a 99F..........

Since this thread is near the top, here is my 99F in 308 (poor pics, sorry)
My dad gave it to me for my 14th birthday (first hunting season), about 30 years ago now

What is meant by "pre-mil" ?

Very nice!

'Pre-Mil' refers to receivers under 1 million serial numbers.

My last two Savage 99's have been sub-1 million production.....
