The Savage 99 Thread!

Hi '99 fans,

I'd really like my next gun to be a Savage 99 in .358. Seems though that they all go for a huge premium. So if I were to make one, what would be best? I understand that an action off of a 300 savage or a 308 would cycle the ammo - is that right? What's the best bet for changing up the barrel?

Also, where can I get a simple explanation of what the different letters in the various versions of the model 99 mean (i.e. A, C, etc.)

RG,

I went the route of having a .358 made, as I had neither the patience nor the finances to acquire one otherwise. It was my understanding that the rotor in the 300 Savage action won't feed the .358 cartridges, so I bought a 99c (clip), and had the barrel and chamber redone to .358W.

Ruffed grouse: Just any old 99 won't work for rechambering to 358. I was going to do that with an old E I had in 308, was told by a smith that it didn't have enough wall for the switch. You'll also need a 358 rotor, the 308's won't work. From what I was told, switching it to 338 Federal is much easier for a smith to do and you don't have to find a meaty barrel like an R.

You lucky prick, I'd give my left testicle for a 25-20 219 barrel and you just tripped over one. You get any doubles now on your barrel set with the ones you just got?

Here's my set as it sits right now.

Not yet, but it should go well with the 16 gauge, he has one stock set that is cut to youth lengths, so my daughter will be able to use the Hornet for varmint. Plus we might be able to do business on the 25-20 barrel. Les

Sin the mid-1960's I bought a Savage lever with Octagonal barrel chambered in .303 Savage with a brass muzzle cap that looked to be original to the gun. I got it with a 3/4 full box of ammo for $25 from a friend of my grandfathers. It had been his father's gun. The gun was like new. I bought it for a guy I worked with to go bear hunting and told him if he ever wanted to sell it I wanted to buy it. I asked him about a year later and he told me he had traded it for a 24 of beer. I considered homicide, but decided it was my own stupidity for not keeping it in the first place.
