The T97 Thread!

this is what i expect based off my 27 yard groups. i get like 1-3 inch groups at that range with bulk ammo, so at 100 yards thats about a 12inch group :/

I had similar results with mine.
I sold it.
It was picky on ammo resulting in numerous FTF and FTE depending on type of projectile. Magazine well was finicky with certain mags.
Accuracy was average at best. Even with quality 62gr FMJ it was not shooting any better than 9-12" groups at 100 meters.
For the price of them, it was way too much to start chopping it up and adding rails, FTU's etc for hundreds more dollars.

I like the design though don't get me wrong. It's beefy, built like a f**king tank. When it decided it liked a certain projectile/ammo it cycled like a beast 100% reliable.
But subtract from that the 100% lack of any replacement parts or support, the terrible sights and sloppy mag well combined with very sub par "semi auto black rifle accuracy" at $1,000 plus taxes (!) put me off it pretty fast and I sold her.

Before I sold it I was looking for people who had mounted the FTU and a quality high powered optic so I could rule out wether it was the bad iron sights that was the cause of the really poor accuracy. But all I got were BS internet stories of 1.5 MOA with the stock irons etc etc No honest confirmation. still looking/curious if any of you all can show me what it can really do with that upgrade lol

Even at 50 meters with good quality FMJ ammo that did cycle in it with the stock irons I was only managing 5-6" groups! I can shoot 2" groups at that range with my old SKS and surplus Chinese ball ammo!
It was a bit of a dissapointment really all in all. Just my 2 cents.

After doing the FTU mod and adding a mid range optic, I am hitting my 10" gong at 100 yards with my T97. Using chinese surplus ammo and a 10 round mag, I'm consistently hitting 10 for 10. In fact, the biggest issue is waiting for the gong to stop swinging so I can take the next shot. I'll be adding another gong to help with target acqusition, but I'm going smaller this time. Something around a 6-8". When I shoot paper which is rare, I'm shooting 4" groups at the same distance. It is a good rifle, but it is finicky when you're breaking it in. With close to 800 rounds through mine it runs flawlessly. Except for the crappy trigger design, it is my favorite shooter. The LHG should take care of that.

That sounds like the first honest report I've read on this site yet with the rifle and an optic.
Have you tried it with better quality ammunition Sir?
I had to suspect that it was the iron sights more than anything that was resulting in my accuracy personally as well as most peoples reports.
I'm no competition marksman but I'm a decent shot lol
Thanks for the post by the way!

I've run a couple of different types of ammo through it. I've had some luck with American Eagle 223, but I started running my own reloads a month ago and they seem to shoot well. The only problem with reloading is that the surplus ammo primers are a pain to re&re. The cost is sure nice though!

The iron sights were no good for me. I just couldn't hit anything with any consistency. My first choice was to go with some Troy battle sights. But I got a great deal on a Bushnell AR optic, and couldn't say no. I'm not a bad shot with some proper sights, but those T97 irons were horrible, hahaha!

The T97 did take some time for me to really love it. I've had issues with the trigger pin and bar system popping out, which I fixed with some shims that I made. I did some paint work to change it up, did some work with the magwell, and of course the addition of the FTU. I really enjoy working on my guns though. To me, if I can take something off the shelf and make it better, I'm doing a good thing. That's what the T97 offered. My brother can't do much with his Tavor, as it is really nice out of the box. My T97 is like a hot rod. It gets better with every little mod.

Cheers!

this ^. the t97 was my first rifle and im glad i went with it, ive learned a lot tinkering with all the random problems it came with.

I love mine to bits, even my 10 year old can comfortably hit the gong 10/10,it runs fine with Norc surplus, and LAR15 mags.
I done the FTU conversion on mine as I just couldn't use those iron sights lol,it's now my daughters favourite rifle, she used to love my 10/22.

If cost wasn't an issue what would be the best way to improve the accuracy? I would like to use one of these on coyotes but the +2moa accuracy of this gun won't cut it imo.

That's something I find a bit maddening. I posted my iron sight groups a few pages back, and I think with the right ammo and more practice, the rifle is capable of consistent 3" groups with those horrible stock sights. But I just about never see groups from guys with the FTU and a proper optic, I kinda want to know what the rifle's real potential is!

Hey Jarvy,

here is some range report that you might find a bit interesting.

T-97 Range Report
I have noticed that there aren't that many Range Report Postings for the Type 97 NSR posted on this forum.
Therefore, I thought, I would share my experience with those of you interested & curious about it.

Please note that I am by no means an expert shooter. Do not take my range result as what this compact rifle is capable of. This is just me shooting more out of sheer curiosity to see what it can do with various ammo I happen to have at hand. I am absolutely certain that the rifle will shoot way better in experienced & capable hands as well as with different type of ammo.

For those of you wondering what the set up is on the rifle:

  • Burris AR 536 sight
  • AAC Blackout Muzzle Brake
  • Surefire Scout Light
  • NcStar green dot sight (it Co-witnesses with the Burris sight through the Burris see through tube located on the riser block)

I find the NcStar sight has two benefits. {it is also sighted @ 100 meters, same as the Burris AR 536}
  1. I use cheek weld instead of chin weld to see through.
  2. It certainly feels like I am shooting using rear iron Peep sight with green laser dot for the front sight.

I zeroed the rifle with Sellier & Bellot 69 GR HPBT because, as the rifling is 1:7 twist & this particular ammo was made for such barrel.

  • The target paper is 14 X 17 inch.
  • 50 meters target result consists of 5 different ammo with a 5 shot group
  • 100 meters target result consists of 4 different ammo also with a 5 shot group
  • 200 meters target result consist of 2 types of ammo only, with a 5 shot group. However, it looks like some of the bullets strayed from the target paper.

The rest you can see from the target result.
All in all, the result was alright, considering that this is just a battle rifle & not a precision rifle. I am hoping that the accuracy will improve after I have shot a couple hundred rounds through it as well by then, I will hopefully gain a bit more experience on how to handle this puppy.

Thanks for the range report. Seems to shoot as well as a stock Tavor or XCR. I think that is accurate enough for yotes. Even 100m deer in NB.

I'm looking for some good low mounts for a 30mm weaver tactical, clearance really shouldn't be an issue. Anyone have recommendations for what they're using on their FTUs?

In the above picture of my T97 with the scope riding super low I'm using nothing but the absolute best rings available for $65

http://www.weaveroptics.com/rings_bases/tactical/6-hole_picatinny_rings/

The optic is quite small tho... For a standard 3-9x40 hunting scope I think mediums should work but you may want to verify that.

I think that may work, it looks really close, I'm using a weaver tactical model 800364 1-5 x 24 CIRT , those low rings look like they'll work, no question the medium rings will. Hot damn, amazon prime has them for just under 40 bucks... thanks!
