Well I'm really going to throw a screw into Sheep's argument about polar bear hunting................;);):d:d

But then I have been accused of a minor type of insanity, not treatable and usually self destructive given enough time.

LOL...but guessing you had an Inuit behind you packing a rusty .303 that fired at least three times out of ten!

Speaking from experience?

I don't really see an issue hunting pronghorn with a .338WM

And you do have an issue hunting a big bear with a 30-06? Read my signature line.

I'd happily do it with a 280 Remington as well. When you are picking an ideal cartridge I sure as heck wouldn't pick the one ideal for 10% of the game hunted either.

Doug,

greetings from Yukon.

you didnt explain how many arrows you shoot?

congrats again on that hunt.

And I would ask what disadvantage does the .300 Win Mag pose to a hunter who isn't troubled by recoil face on any game he would tackle with an -06? :) Further, what risk does he take in using the .300 on pronghorn, instead of the -06? It's all well and good to call the .30-06 sufficient, I agree it is. But what I want to know is why choose it over the .300, which has unarguable advantages.

Doug, heck of a neat way to bag your white bear.

One arrow only Phil.....................and no my Inuk didn't have a rusty .303 he had a gorgeous little full stock Sako 338, which I seriously considered mugging him for. But didn't know how to get back to Tuk so I rethought my plan and tried to buy it to no avail as he had borrowed it from his BiL, when I said I wouldn't hunt if all he was taking for back up was his 270.............JEEEZZZZEEEEE, everybody knows a 270 won't kill polar bear. I don't know what that old Inuk was thinking..............

Anyway obviously the ultimate caliber for ALL NA game is a 98 lb draw Mathews bow with weighted Carbon Express 400 arrows and a Satellite CoC conventional broadhead with replaceable inserts. JEEEEEZZZZZEEEE you guys and your big ol' guns..........Really??????????

Here's more proof if you think I'm wrong...................Different Inuk, different hunt, different bow, but close enough....70 lb draw Mathews

And here's some more proof, my boy at 16 with a Mathews Feathermax 70 lb draw bow and #4 P&Y all time Dall Ram

And then there is this guy my boy took a last spring.......his first arrowed grizzly, again with a Mathews but I don't remember what bow he shoots now.

So really, you guys can argue all you want about calibers and best choices for all NA game..............when really it can all be done with pointed sticks............I also have two bow taken bison but no photos sorry.........

Fans of the 30-06 should consider that the 375 Ruger offers similar trajectory but with a much larger bullet. It's truly North Americas Ultimate cartridge.

The obsolete H&H will do in a pinch, but it's not North American.
