So last night I loaded some 44-40, but not your everyday 44-40. I have several rifles with the original .427" bore and I have 2 more modern ones with the .429 bore, my Miroku/Winchester 92 SRC and I have a pre 64 model 94....yes a 94, in 44-40 that I believe also has the .429 bore as it shoots terribly with the jacketed .427s that I tried. I picked up about 1000 of the 200 gn Win bulk .427 JSPs at WSS when they had them so I'm set for the old girls........with 9.5 gns of Unique behind them they shoot very well in the originals. So I just picked up about 400 of the 210 gn JHP Winchester bulk .429 a year or so ago, but had no empty cases to load, as I had them all loaded with the .427 bullets. Last week the kid and I managed to empty 50 of them so now I shall try these 210 gn .429s in the modern 44-40s. I have selected a Waters favorite load with 21 gns of 4227 and a CCI 300. These bullets are a shiny silver and are real "purdey", hope they shoot as good as they look.........
Then I decided to make some proper brass for my 2 Win 95s in 30-03, no not 303, 30-03 which is the original development of the 30-06 in 1903, and is identical except for neck length. The 30-03 has a case length of 2.54" instead of the 2.49" of the '06, other than neck length the two cartridges are identical. So rather than just fire '06 from my 30-03s I decided to make some correct cases for it. I happened to have 100 new W-W nickel 280 Rem cases so I pushed the shoulder back on 50 of them with the '06 sizer die until they chambered in the one with the tightest headspace and then I loaded them up with a max load of Varget and Fed 215s and 139 gn Horn BT. I did not expand the necks first as I don't like doing this. I'd rather blow them out by fire forming them as they come out more concentric, I have found. I also have 100s of 7mm bullets that I don't use so I loaded up 50 and now I will have some fun making 30-03 cases.
