Thinking about a Gew 98...

Had battle damaged GEW98 given to me 30 yrs ago. Restored the 1917 Suhl, headspaced ok,stock repaired, added worn sling, and excellent butcher blade ensamble. Looks great and shoots very well.

I lucked out and got a 1905 Mauser-Oberndorf Gewehr 98 last summer for pretty cheap.

I bought an Israeli K98 converted to 7.62N. When I got home I found it was a mid war G98 converted to a K98 in WW2. When it was done fighting whomever, it made its way to Israel via Czechoslovakia because of the winter trigger guard and other marked parts. When it made it to Israel an armoured took the time to carefully peen any swastikas, but left the Imperial Eagles. Then sometime in the 60’s it was converted to 7.62N as it had been replaced by the FAL. Most likely it either went to a kibbutz for a walking around rifle or into storage. Then sold to someone in NS, then I bought it and currently resides in my collection.

Never found a good G98, so I got the next best thing:

...to go with my K98, so have some questions.

I've gone through Mr. Ball's Mauser book but I'd like to get input from the Gew 98 owners here as I consider looking for one.

- Overall, what's your experience been with searching and shooting the rifles?
- What's fragile/prone to breaking?
- Things to check when assessing one for purchase? (aside from bore condition and headspace)
- What replacement bits are impossible to source (and if missing from a rifle might act as a deal-breaker)?
- Prices these days? (shooter grade)

Of course, brag photos of your Gew 98s welcomed.
Just found my pics of my 1916 Spandau GEW 98. This is what I call my "All Dressed" rifle with night sights, original large capacity magazine, and action slide cover ( I heard they were made by Bing Toy Co.). I have since added an orignal black sling.
Further details may be gleaned from a Forgotten Weapons video on U-Tube entitled WW1 Night Sights demonstating the Brit and german night sight variants. Still waiting for Nick or somebody to find me a 1917 complete sniper. John T.
