Thompson SMG

Winnipeg police museum has one one of their 1927 Colt Thompson's on display. Apparently at least one more still resides with the police armoury. The Winnipeg police last used the Thompson in a shoot out with some bank robbers, I believe back in the 70s or early 80s. The poor accuracy of the Thompson (rumoured to be partly the fault of the guy holding the gun) led to it's withdrawal from the force.

That is a perfect excuse for more full auto shoots. You never know who will benefit from trigger time.

(Oh shush! That is just too much fun, and the feds don't want or care who has fun.)

Most of us couldn't afford to feed a FA, but that notwithstanding, it's a class of firearm that many would love to own.

I don't believe that there has ever been an incident of a criminal using a FA to commit a crime in either the US or Canada.

Well at the risk of stating the obvious, that's because FA firearms have been tightly controlled since the mid 1930s with only duly licensed individuals in both the US and Canada being allowed to own them. Before that it was pretty much open season with names like MG Kelly, "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn, John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Bonnie and Clyde and Al Capone readily coming to mind.

There have been incidents since then with rogue individuals or criminals obtaining them from military and police armouries. Dennis Lortie and his SMG act in the Quebec legislature in 1984 was the most recent incident in Canada that I can recall. He killed 3 and wounded 13 others.

Anyone have Thompson parts and accessories? Used to be a lot around in Canada. Montreal Depot had all
the early 1928 stuff. Blake had lots of it. I have a complete box of tsmg 1921 45 shot shells. Instead of lead
it is shotgun pellets from there.

You can't be serious, there are plenty of examples. The more correct version of your statement is that there have been very very few incidents of a licensed holder committing a crime with a full automatic in either the USA or Canada.

I'm not referring to a nut bar like Lortie, but a career criminal or Jihadist like Z-B. He used a lever action 30-30 for crying out loud! Oz wants to ban those as well and anything else that can hold more than 5 rds. That'll make the world a safer and gentler place.

We've been controlling who can legally own a handgun since the 1930's. That has sure been effective at keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, gangstas and nut bars, hasn't it? It has reduced the number of LEGAL owners who couldn't be bothered to get their government's permission to own something that they might had had in their possession for decades.

It's the one-gun-at-at-time appeasement and attrition game and buying into it is traitorous act. "We don't need no stinkin' FA's, 10 rd capacity lever guns, semi-auto shotguns, .32 semi-auto pistols, 4" or less handguns of any calibre ... ", you fill in the appropriate term.

Some just don't and won't get it. That is collaboration.

Anyone out there have what would be a knowledgeable guesstimate as to the # of folks that can presently legally purchase a CA, or FA Tommy Gun ??

you do realise these things weigh about 12 pounds- I had a chance to get a 1928 or 21 or 27- the semi- auto not a convert - with 2 drums and a buch of sticks for 750 bucks- turn it down b/c it was 2 heavy and I had the uzi- and it was the unrestricted version in the wooden fitted case

Man up and start going to the gym more if you thought a Thompson was "2 heavy"............ nuff said.

considering my mbr ( an REAL m 14 ) btw,, weighs in at about 12, and the uzi weighs in at 9, I am indeed qualified to judge the thompson as "too heavy' - it's also downright clumsy in this config- ie it's STUPID- I also compared it to a mac 10- this was at the firing line years ago- the uzi was a second place contender till THE LIGHTS WENT OUT- then the hand find hand recharge system took over- that alone is why it outshines the thompson

So the Thompson is an archaic design - so what? It has a cachet about it from the US Gangster era and that famous pic of Winnie posing with one, bowler hat and cigar. included.
Not many guns get to that iconic status and even non-gun owners recognize a Thompson at first glance whereas they couldn't identify any other firearm.
