Thoughts on 1911 in 9mm?

The SAMs are a great price point if you just want to try one out and see if it something you want to get into. I got my commander from Wolverine for $425. Once I decided I like the 9mm 1911 platform, I dropped the $2100 on my STI. Never looked back. Might sell my SAM now, barely get used.

I alsos am a big fan of sti, I have owned two a cheaper version, and just bought the lawman. They bot shot like lasers. I love the 9mm in the 1911 platform. Mags are expensive though.

I agreed with this but would add double stack mag system as an alternate to, or in conjunction with, commander length slide. In gov't length/single stack I'd recommend going 9x23 if you reload and 38 super if you don't.

As long as it's in Commander form it's fine....too wimpy for a full sized 1911.

I found mags to be cheap really, it's sad to say but single stack mags are best not to be bought in Canada.
With their 10 rounds cap, no pin needed to import them.

And this brings the next question, will the OP wish to attend shooting sports with his 1911?
If yes different sports have different requirements, its to be researched...

Hitzy, i have the STI adjustable rear Novak cut, i hate to say it but it sucks compared to a nice bomar.
Will have to research the Dlask one never looked at it.

Something that I'm thinking of doing maybe a little later on. Just got holster qualified and would like something to bring to the range and practice with. At the same time i would like to get a gun to practice with that I'm going to shoot comp for. Guess Im gonna have to look into competition requirements too..Thanks for info!

I have a STI Trojan, 9mm, Tripp Research mags and I couldn't be happier *except* the finish could be more durable. I use it for competition so it does see a lot of holster use. The hard chrome option would have add $300 to the cost thou.

If you want a 9mm Browning design why not buy a Hi-Power? From what I can see they were designed to be a 9...the 1911 wasn't.

You are right, but if everything is tuned right you will have a perfect function. I broke my ejector the first week I got my ranger ll, never replaced it, now at 8k rounds counts in it just in 2014. Never jammed on me whatsoever. Aftec Extractor, Metalform mags, reloaded ammo specs we're all huge factors. If OP is somewhat comfortable tuning a bit of stuff he'll have no problems making this work for him.

OP, when you click on a gun they will say competition approval, like this you're sure to start with something good for comp in the future. I started the same way, shooting the gun alone at the range for 6 months then slowly starting comps with the gun I had practiced fundamentals 5k+ rounds with.

The other way to see it, use it for 20-25k rounds, then get it hard chromed. Will look just as nice as factory, and you'll get the chance to retight your rail tolerances.
Myself I cant wait to get there so I can get a sort of black hard chrome if it even exists.

I was thinking of doing just that. I believe Dark International does hard chrome for around $250.00

Edit: Yep, just checked.
Hard Chroming - most handguns $ 250.00

I am seriouly looking to get a STI Trojan 1911 in 9mm, the reviews are flattering at this caliber in this pistol... JP.

Go for it. I just sold my Trojan to a friend for $1,150 as I had not shot the gun for a couple of years and wanted a Shadowline. The Trojan is an excellent platform in 9MM. I should add I also, at one time owned a Norinco NP 29 in 9MM and it was a great gun as well. If yo ucan get a Trojan buy it. Great gun in every respect. Mate it with Wilson mags or Megar anf you will have a great combo. Sean Hanson is a great guy to deal with at Freedom Ventures. You won't be sorry.

Take Care

Bob

STI Spartan in 9mm is another option for around $800. The Spartan doesn't have a ramped barrel while the Trojan does and costs a few hundreds more.

OP - you might want to PM Schecter on this. I have a SAM 9mm, and I'd be hard pressed to define a better value for you.

9mm 1911s are like selling crack to neighbourhood kids you really hate. It's morally wrong, but strangely satisfying anyway. And after a while it's so easy it feels like you're cheating.

Downside: the total lack of recoil and the great 1911 trigger potential will mask issues so much that if you switch to real guns and try to shoot them, you'll suddenly think you can't shoot. Or, if you don't know better, you'll think other guns don't work right.

The mags are the big question as there's no real spec to use but the usual suspects make good ones.

I prefer 9mm 1911s to have 4 1/4 slides to compensate for the europellet's weakness. Yes, you can just use a lightened slide. You can also #### crack whores, but it's just plain wrong and you'll probably get a disease.

Springfield's gotten pretty good at 9mm 1911s. I'd probably look at a 9mm Range Officer, assuming there's some way to desuck the sights and get some proper fixed sights on there.

Trojans are great but if you can spend a little more i would get the sentry for the forged frame.

... and gain pretty much nothing.

I had both the Spartan and the Sentry, both in 9mm; still have the Spartan. The Sentry was nice, but, to ME, it wasn't worth twice the price of the Spartan, which has 7k+ trouble free rounds.

To the OP, get either a Spartan or a Trojan, a bunch of Tripp Cobra mags (better than ETMs) and you'll be good to go.

I really love my Trojan in 9mm. Got it from Double Tap. It never fails, and eats up all the ammo I have tried from 115 to 147 gr. Mags can be a pain to load if you go with 10 rounds but Cobra seem to work well for 10 rounders. Stay as far away from Wilson mags as you can. They slide a plastic spacer in the back of the mag to make them work with 9mm so I am guessing they were made for .38 super. This just does not work. Any of the STI products are great quality for their price.
