Presently I shoot a Ruger 30.06 S/S laminent. It's an excellent gun and but on the heavy side >8lbs, and I don't like the drop plate magazine system.

I want a lighter gun ~6-7 lbs, and has to have a clip without a drop plate. So I've been thinking of buying a Tikka T3 Lite. I'm interest in hearing what people think of these guns, and what caliber I should get. I'm stuck on either a 30.06, 300WSM, or a 300 Mag.

I plan on hunting moose, caribou, goats, sheep, and elk.

Thanks,

Mark

I've got one in .300 WSM with a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15x40AO on it, and it's by far my favourite field gun. Just a great-handling rifle that's taken it's share of deer in the last 4 years I've had it, and never had a single problem with it.

My only advice is to take your time and work in the barrel with some good hot hunting loads, with plenty of cooling time between 5-shot groups. Mine snapped out of a 2-3 MOA funk right into 1 MOA or better after about 15-20 rounds off the bench, and hasn't loosened up a bit since.

3 of my stalking clients here use it and it is very popular, no one has it in 30.06 though, most seem content with 6.5 swede or .308.

My main hunting partner has one in .270 win and he swears by it. He owns A savage, remington, browning and weatherby centerfire hunting rifle. BUT it seems that of the 20 or so days a year we hunt together, he has that one in his hands 19/20 times. I have to admit, I think its a great rifle, but I will never admit it to him. Its more of a .270 vs .30-06 debate that has now carried over to rifle selection. I just refuse to lose to him. I dont see how you can go wrong with one, they are light, high quality, decently priced, available in tonnes of calibers. I just prefer to keep my money spent on this continents rifle makers for some unknown reason.

the nice thing about the t3's are good adjustable trigger and good acuracy out of the box. if looking for a no tinker rifle there a great deal. i have owned several and all were good from the box after a trigger adjustment made in minutes with the supplied allen key. i only own one at this time a 300 short. i've mever spent a nicke on it, its got lots of scuffs and scars but still shoots great.

I would love to have one. Nice fit. Go with the 300 Win Mag. Most flexable of your calibre choices listed. The 270 WSM that was suggested does not afford the flexability of the .30 cal's with regards to bullet selection. The 300 Win Mag is still faster than the 300 WSM.

I like the Tikkas (I have three, including a .30-06) but I have to say, if you're planning on a .30-06, .300WM or .300WSM, you might want to invest in a quality recoil pad. While they're a pleasure to carry in the field, there are some drawbacks to having such a light rifle. ;)

I really like my T-3 (270 WSM), it's pretty light and nice to pack when I do a lot of walking. T-3s almost always seem to shoot good regardless of choice of caliber.

Try a T-3 lite in a 338 wm lol! it lets ya know when the pin hit the primer.

One of the sharpest recoil hitting guns I own, crisp so it is.

But the rest are great... no issues

I have one as well in 223 and i really like it. Dont worry about the plastic as this gun is well built and they are really good shooters. I plan on buying another in 30-06 as well. I have heard no reports of anyone breaking a clip or trigger guard on these at all.

the plastic is tough as hell. i bought my fist tikka when the berreta rep was doing a special. i was concerned about the durability of the mag. the rep threw it against the wall then stood on it. i was convinced. no metal mag would take that abuse and still work. years later inc cold weather use nothing has broken.

I haven't seen or heard of one yet that doesn't shoot well. They are great to carry and like any other rifle need to be cleaned and maintained properly.

Buy one, it will probably shoot better than most people can hold.

The 30-06 is a fine choice, as all of the T3 rifles have a long action, and the 30-06 is a proven performer. It's also available in more places in your neck of the woods.

Did he give you a new mag, or that one? :D
