Hey guys, sorry to post yet another Tikka T3x thread but I just have a couple more questions. So I am pretty dead set on getting a T3x Battue, and I'm going to order the walnut stock and keep an eye out for a synthetic stock later on.

My dilemma is between .308 and 30-06, I know this is a age old dilemma and I don't want to go into the difference between the two cartridges (I actually know them anyways). My question is what cartridge suits this smaller carbine rifle better? With the synthetic stock this rifle weighs 6.5 pounds and with wood it's almost 7 pounds. This rifle from what I understand is built on a long action anyways so if I have to carry that long action should I just opt for the 30-06? On the other hand am I better off going with the slightly less potent .308 for a short lightweight carbine like the Battue?

I am going to be using it to hunt moose, deer and black bear in Ontario in some pretty thick bush. Most shots are under 100 yards and quite often at moving animals. Yes I will be buying one of those quick detach Masi bases with a scope for 100-200 yard shots if sitting on a meadow.

So can you see any advantages or disadvantages with the .308 vs 30-06 in the T3x Battue specifically? Thanks

.308win gets my vote based on the shorter barrel, but as you mentioned either one will work. The recoil difference shouldn't be worth considering in your decision I don't think and yes the Tikka is a long action with a bolt stop that limits the cycle length to match the shorter round. If you reload and find you are limited in space for seating longer projectiles you can pick up or modify the bolt stop to full length and get a long magazine. Bam!

Shorter barrel? Tikka T3x Battue is 510mm length across the board isn't it? Or are you saying because they are all 510mm (20") the .308 is better?

30-06. I had the same dilemma and since I'm stuck with a long action anyways, I decided to take advantage of it. The difference in extra bolt travel and recoil is minimal.

I guess my only concern with the 30-06 and a 20" barrel is the muzzle blast and how loud it will be. I know the .308 will also bark quite a bit but not as much as the 30-06. I did read somewhere that a 30-06 is well suited to a 22" barrel or longer, if going with a 20" or below the .308 will be better.

I also realize that this is absolutely splitting hairs but if I was to buy this rifle with the intent of it being my "forever hunting rifle" would I be better suited to match the short 20" barrel with a .308?

I'd have the .308. Prefer it in a rifle this light with a shorter barrel. But really there isn't going to be much difference.

I have both a t3x battue lite and a t3x lite stainless. Both are in 30-06. Both weigh about the same and both shoot the same ammo. To be honest, you don't even notice the difference in muzzle blast when you touch one off. The 2.5 inch difference in barrel length doesn't matter a helluva lot when it comes down to it.

Thank you very much for all the help guys, I have just gotten off the phone from ordering a brand new Tikka T3x Battue Lite in .308 Win. At the end of the day I think it will fill all my needs very nicely and at shots under 100 yards I don't think any animal in North America is going to notice a .308 vs 30-07. I think in the long run I will be overall happier with the .308 in this carbine rifle. I have full intent on ordering a walnut stock, 5 round magazines and a massi quick detach scope base in the near future.

I think this is going to be just about the perfect moose, deer and black bear rifle for close shots in the woods. Thanks again!

You won't regret your purchase and you can always pick up a used/new take off T3x synthetic stock off EE for cheap.

Any Tikka Battue owners can you please post a picture of the top of your rear sight. I have 2 holes on the top of my rear sight but only one screw in the holes. Is this correct? Can somebody explain to me how to adjust this rear sight. Can you please take some pics for me from the side and the top of your rear sight. Thanks!

i had one 695 in 300 win mag in battue sight. very good rifle but the problem was in the dark (not night shooting condition) the flame was a little too much. sights were very good and very handy to carry.

Scratch my previous Post I just took a good look at the sight and noticed that there are infact 2 screws in the top. I am assuming the top one is what holds the sight on and the bottom is the adjustment? Tighten or loosten the screw that is way down in the bottom hole for height adjustment? How do you do windage?

Nice thing about 308, you can always get a take off CTR stock with CTR mag system or an Atlasworx AI type mag system that also fits into that stock. Which allow 5-10 round mags with possibly longer load length.
