Timbers Wolves really this big ?

I know the male I got, i could't get the back end off of the ground.
It took two of us to pack him out on a game pole.
As my wife is 115 pound and I can pic her up.

I grew up in western manitoba on the trapline. In the seventies we had some of the largest timber wolf packs ever recorded (we counted 47 in one pack) and I believe we took the largest timber wolf in Manitoba history (based upon game warden records at least). My father and I regularly took timberwolves in snare sets, ground trap sets and by rifle. The largest wolf we ever took was 165 lbs. They are very rangey and tall. The original photos on this thread are heavily edited and do not reflect reality.

So the show set in Yosemite National Park about the Druid wolf pack with the wolves that are almost square they are so thick through the body, that was fake also becuase all wolves are long and thinner? btw these wolves were imported from Canada.

Those are probably 120 lb wolf in the pics. The fur is thick, and the photo technique makes them look bigger than they really are but they are big animals. Makes those "100 lb" ;) eastern coyotes look kinda tame, don't they?

I think the "100 lb" eastern coyotes are more likely in the 40-60 lb range, which isn't that uncommon for a large male. Very few people who've shot and weighed them would claim 100lbs.

I agree that the photos were taken in a way that would make the wolves appear larger. I have no doubts that the photos are real.

I agree. I've weighed quite a few wolves and it takes a pretty good sized one to break 100 lbs.
99.9% of the time, estimated weight is quite a bit higher than actual weight, especially for bear and wolves.

I was making a joke about the "100 lb eastern coyotes" because it's obvious they aren't when you compare them to a 120 lb wolf.

DogDuster6mm shot a big son of a ##### last year. We'll see if he chimes in with pics. It was a gorgeous dog.

Pats a good buddy of mine, and that was one big dog!! He's full of $hit most of the time, but his hunting pics and trader rating are always genuine.

Hakx

Just reviewed the pics. All the hunters seem to be hunched over, bent kneed, leaning back etc.
This makes the wolf look longer, larger, thicker bodied than it is....the bottom pic it is very obvious when the hunters knees are looked at.

I've seen some close to that size in MB. Nice wolf! My dog is a long hair German Shepard(Alsatian) and looks pretty big. Big head, plenty of fur(like a wolf) and stands tall. He looks like an easy 110lbs, but only weighs 90 lbs. The thick heavy coat of fur is deceiving. The timber wolves around here are bigger than Rover, so I'm sure there's plenty of 120 lbers out there.

I'm guessing the massive size of the wolves is due to the camera perspective (I think that's what I mean:redface:) Not saying they aren't big, but where you sit in relation to your subject makes a huge difference.

A good example would be the photo of redrider with the black wolf. If the person taking the photo had knelt down to be level with redrider, it would appear slightly bigger. And if he stood up with it, or did the famous "photographer almost laying on the ground, guy with animal leans back and away from animal" he'd probably have a mutant wolf.:p
