Too many .30-06 choices!

I'd also look at the Barnes TTSX and ther Nosler Accubond ammunition as well...see what your new rifle likes!
In general, out of dozens upon dozens of rifles I've come across in BC in the past few years, their owners have
achieved their best groups and hunting results from Barnes ammo for larger game and Accubonds for deer.

And yes, I can crank them out with a pump faster than all get out, but I doubt I could do it as fast as a semi.

You'd be surprised at how fast a 760 will work, but either way one has to recover from the prior shot and have a proper target acquisition before the next shot. A semi might reload a bit faster, but the shooter won't be able to shoot that fast and still be effective, thus the term "spray & pray".

Fun fact for everybody, I shot milk jugs from 25 yards with my uncles 7400 in 30-06 it went through 3 jugs and came to rest in the 4th, I shot the same distance and load with my 7600 and it went through 5 jugs and came to rest in the 6th. It's kinda mind boggling how much power the semi loses cycling the action just a tidbit of info. I wouldn't believe it if i hadn't seen it myself.

Interesting ....... Wonder if these results could be repeated.

Interesting, butI wouldn't assume too much based on this one experience.

From everything I've read, the gas that is vented into the gas system on a semi is actually vented after the bullet has left the barrel, and so has no effect on velocity.

I do know that my Rem 742 loads in 30-06 exceed 2800 fps with 180's, and that's with a 22" bbl.

The other thing is that decreased penetration does not necessarily mean decreased impact velocity - sometimes exactly the opposite (Assuming you repeated your water test a couple of dozen times and always got the same result).

And my reccomendation for a 30-06 semi to quickly react to fast moving game at closer and medium ranges - M1 Garand. A bit more expensive than a used BAR, but if you can affort it, I don't know anyone who doesn't love theirs. I shot my moose (on a full run at about 100 yards) with one a few years back.

To play devils advocate it sounds like he needs more time at the range getting more familiar with his hunting rifle.

A rifle not firing because it may be out if battery is a good thing IMHO.

You may be right but hes had the rifle a long time already and its not like it happens every time, and hes not the only person I know with one having that problem.

When it comes to which commercial hunting rifle, buy the one that you like and that fits you well. Other than price, mostly based on the brand name(the word 'Browning' on a rifle adds to the price. Kind of like the way the word 'Cadillac' does to a car.), they're all pretty much the same. Semi-autos, while they're accurate enough for hunting, aren't tack drivers either.

I'm not sure, but once I get enough milk jugs together again I'll try it! I just wanted to catch the bullet to see how well they held up at near muzzle velocities. Was interesting to see a difference though.

Hard on that poor old girl! I'm not real sure but I know after the bullet passes the gas port it starts using them to work the action. I know how to fix em but as far as how it all works down to a T once the trigger is pulled not so much.

thank you my good sir, and wanting a semi is enough reason to get one I used a 7400 In 308 for a couple years, they're just as dead but they're kinda weighty. 180 grain core lokt soft points in the 308 murder deer and moose in a hurry with a BIG hole, just a suggestion for ammo. Got a picture of your old 99?

Thats what I wondered,so i just tried it.Shot a Blr in 284,and a Win 100 in 284 at 5 four litre jugs filled with water at about 60 yards.You can not change the laws of physics.I guess my 100 must be different than a 7400!

I was just getting settled in to my watch for the last run of the season. After playing peekaboo behind a bunch of balsams, he finally walked (yes, walked: the hounds didn't pick up his trail until about twenty minutes after I shot him) into the open and gave me his full chest. The only thing that would have made it easier is if he pulled the trigger himself!

Don't get me wrong - I still love my 99. But with the way the deer fly with hounds at their heels, I'm thinking the semi will let me squeeze off a few more rounds before the deer gets back into thick brush.

No it won't! All you will be doing at that point is cutting firewood! I grew up shooting semis. Shot a decent number of deer. Missed even more. For the last 10 years I have hunted with a bolt action. I don't even like hunting with bolts. They forced me to slow down, and make my first shot count! My father always told me to do that. He hunted with a semi, and rarely fired more than one shot. He was the best shot I have ever known. He never shot with a scope. He hunted with open sights, and knew that rifle inside and out. It was part of him. My advice to you is, if you have hunted with that savage for 22 years and love it. Stick with it! Just my 2 cents!
