Tuna can

What's nice about this particular style tuner is it directs all the blast/noise downrange. I don't need to wear my ear muffs when shooting the CCI SV.

I noticed this effect is much less on my 18" Bergara vs my 24" CZ. Discharge noise is the same at the muzzle without the tuner, so there is no actual reduction in sound level.

A large bore? So easy to clean?

Jerry

I've actually never had to clean one.

Generally speaking, all tuners reduce the sound.

More important, readers considering this device should ask -- does this tuner actually work? A tuner should improve results consistently.

The results posted by Yanick in post #32 show results with the tuner that are at best inconsistent. Some of the tuner improved groups are two-to-three times as large as the smallest, from .22" to .70" in one set of results and from .23" to .65" in the other.

In post #46 another tuna can user showed a target suggesting positive tuner results with setting #5. In post #57, the same shooter found positive results with settings #2 and #9 and somewhat positive at #5. Nevertheless, in the first target (post #46) the results for settings #2 and #9 were equally poor. In other words, on two different targets there were very different results with the same tuner settings.

This is not to criticize anyone. More information is needed to provide reliable evidence that this tuner does what a tuner should do.

When will shooters using the tuna can tuners show targets that verify the successful tuner settings? A group here and there proves nothing. How about ten groups with the best setting?

Ammo donations will be accepted to fulfill your request. Until then... you get what you get when you get it. Or purchase your own tuner and sell it if you're not happy with it.

Seriously? You're in need of a box of CCI SV to verify your settings or can't afford it? That's really bad luck. More than anyone else, you should want to verify that your tuner settings actually work.

Anyone who says one box worth of CCI SV -- or any .22LR match ammo -- is too much to use to verify that a tuner does what it's supposed to do can't be very serious about shooting with a tuner. No one should take seriously single groups as confirmation of anything either. They should wait for further information to see if this tuner works.

Shooters with tuner experience will seek to verify tuner settings by shooting as many groups as possible -- on more than one range trip. Single groups mean nothing.

I meant to post this a while back but things got crazy trying to get my 6mm Creedmoor ready for the 2021 Canadian Sharpshooter Classic in Alberta.

Here's a target when I was testing tuner settings. 5 round groups, top row is without Tuna Can.

I'll run this test from time to time to see if changing conditions, mainly temperature, affects the tune.

Nice family portrait of Tuna Can rimfire barrel tuners and a couple of the Tuna Rolls at the Northern Rimfire Series match in July.

Very nice! I like the stubby TC... Is that one modded to a shorter length?

Quite a few competitors at the July Outlaw Guelph match were running with a TC.

Thanks ROC. It was funny, didn't really even move the rifles around, my squad was just lined up for the next stage.

The stubby ones (Tuna Rolls) are actually built that way for lighter contour barrels or for those who just prefer less weight on the muzzle.

Thanks for the info.

It was raining on and off during our match. Still had a great time for my first rimfire PRS match but majority of the rifles on the safe table had something covering it from the rain so group pictures didn't happen... Alot of nice rigs that weekend.

Your best 100 group was sans tuna, but that probably is not the norm

i ran the tuna can on my bergara b14 w/ the carbon barrel. i tuned at 150 yards because i wanted to bring my overall average group size at the 150+ yard range down.

i was able to tune groups consistently to 1.5" at 150 yards, and that shrank my 300 yard group from 11" to 7" consistently, all 10 shot groups.

i recently rebarreled to an IBI barrel, i have 1500 rounds through the barrel now, started testing at 1000 rounds. i shot 500 rounds, and cannot find a tune yet that gives me better results then the barrel alone.

I’m curious if that will change for you. I’m thinking that I will not get my IBI barrel threaded.

Those Tuna Cans are probably a little too heavy for most barrels. You might find a certain setting that improves results, but, like I experienced with my Harrells tuner and various weight attachments, the setting will be sensitive and a couple clicks in either direction, a change of ammo, or a different day will throw results off. In other words, not reliable. I have found the most consistent results without any weight added to my Harrells.

To improve reliability, I've found you need to test periodically in different conditions. It helps if you find a wide node as well.

A friend has the smaller and lighter Tuna Roll on his 26" Heavy Palma and it is effective. This was a bit of a surprise as we thought that it would need more weight. He's going to try the full size Tuna Can next so we'll see how that goes.

Hey Dastt, would love to see a review on this setup. Been hearing really good things about IBI lately.
