Two cartridges for hunting Canada

This probably has been discussed before, but who cares, we're gun nutz

2 guns is needed for hunting Canadian big game, IMO

a 'light' and a 'heavy'

light could be anything from 243 Winchester on up to 300 Ultra Mag

heavy could be anything from a 325 WSM to a 458 Lott


Personally, I'd pick a 260 Remington and a 338-06

You said "big game", so I'll pick two that are in my present arsenal:

Light would be my .270WSM
Heavy would be my .375 H&H

Any chance this thread can be kept simple and to the point?

I'm on the same line as Bartell but with my 6.5X55 and my .35 Whelen.

If forced to choose between rifles I currently own, I'd go with my 7mm08 or 284 (would be a tough choice) and my 338.

Or maybe just my 338 and 378. Or 338 and 458?


And my 12 gauge, of course. And a 22lr. Acutally, make that three - one bolt, one lever and one semi. No wait, scratch that - make it a turn bolt, a t-bolt, a semi sporter-weight plinker and a semi target gun. And the lever. Oh, and my Hornet for them varmints. And my 204 for them varmints a long ways a way. And the 243 heavy for them varmints a long ways a way in the wind

I have chosen for big game hunitng the 300WSM and the 375 Ruger.

The 300WSM is probably "overkill" when it comes to deer,sheep etc... but it's just perfect as an "all around" deer, moose, sheep, goat elk, bear round.

The 375 Ruger will take care of any "heavy lifting" that I may do, and it's perfect for bears and really, it woudl be fine for most elk and moose situations, since it's got a similar trajectory as a 30-06, and it packs much more punch...

As it is, the custom 300WSM will accompany me on most trips, and the 375 Ruger will be in it's "specialty" place, just as my 223 is.

The 7RM will serve as backup to all of the above, since it's always worked...
