Be sure to check your spam folder, that's where I found my tracking info.

Now that I've done it a few times I'm thinking this rifle is actually easier to strip and reassemble than an SKS. The rear dust cover is a little tricky the first time but once you've seen it apart it pretty much just falls apart. You only need to push the takedown button enough to lift the cover enough to clear the lip in the back of the receiver then it just slides backwards and off.

I'm looking forward to someone coming up with a way to mount a rail on the dust cover, I was thinking the irons would be fine but my old eyes are having a hard time getting used to them, It would be easier with my Aimpoint. Yesterday all I could do with the irons was a three inch 15 shot group at 25 yards. I'm going to blame myself for that though, I'm pretty sure the rifle could do better if I wasn't struggling to get my eyes to focus looking through the sights.

How solid is the dust cover cr5? Doesn't seem like the best of places to mount a optic. How similar is the dust cover to a AK dust cover? You can get railed AK dust covers pretty cheap.

It feels quite solid, good enough for a dot sight anyway. Unfortunately the action spring runs very close to the inside of the cover and the cover seems higher at the rear than the chamber end so simply drilling it won't work, will need to be replaced with a different cover or have something like a 20 or 30 moa rail welded on backwards if you can even weld to the thin cover.

I have no experience with an AK, never even held one so can't compare. The rifle will function without the cover though.

AK dust cover mounts are notoriously awful for holding zero. I expect the T81 cover is basically identical from that standpoint.

Sadly, I think the most practical solutions will be ones that:

- mount on a forward rail system like the aesthetically displeasing unit TI is selling.
- mount on a rail affixed to the receiver in some fashion.
- mount that replaces the rear sight assembly in some way.

What would be great is an AK-like rail affixed to the left receiver sidewall that puts a piece of M1913 rail a millimetre or two above the dust cover, and mount a compact optic in the same plane as the rear sight like an Aimpoint T1 or T2. It would need to be easily removable ala AK mount so that the dust cover can later be removed for cleaning.

These should all be doable (except maybe the side rail, and where the safety is located) but I'm hoping someone makes a dustcover rail thats hinged on where the rear sight would be.
Kind of like a Krebs custom rail or something (but then again no more iron sights)

Anybody got any pics with their SKSs and VZ58s? would love to see some family portraits.

Pictures aren't great but...

So 12 moa..

Right now I am 12ish moa with this gun and these sights, I'm sure the gun can do better than that. I couldn't focus on the target at all, I'm going to try a real target at 50 yards next time.
I'm hoping to get out on my range again tomorrow to try again and maybe do a side by side with the SKS.

So 12 moa..

Really?

cr5 was aiming as a 0.75" dot at 25 yeards. I have a -1 diopter vision issue, which is almost as mild as you can get without being 20/20, and I would not even be able to focus on that dot without glasses.

The front sight post is probably around 8 times larger than that dot through the sights.

There is a reason why people shoot at 14 inch solid black circular at 100m in NRA or Bisley competitions. Anything smaller gives terrible results for slow aimed fire with irons.

To have a reasonable sight picture at 25 yards, the circle should be about 3.5" across, not 0.75". Theoretically, his groups could shrink by as much as a multiple of 4.6 if every other factor were equal. Which would be 3MOA.

Just saying.

The only way to properly test the real accuracy of this rifle
you will need,
steady rest(remove mag for each shot if the mag is in the way.)
clamp on (barrel) laser sight.

both which I don't have, my off hand shooting targets are meaningless...

Benched mine with a front and rear rest Friday and i was horrible at the start as the sights and stock take awhile to get used to .
Shooting to zero the rifle i started getting the groups down .
Two hours of adjusting etc. my best group was 2.5 inches at 100m with check ammo.
Four other groups were 2.7 to 4 inches.
Soft point mfs was 4 inches.
It is zeroed fairly well now and i was bouncing off the 400m gong about 80 percent 20 inch gong.
This is by no means an accuracy report just what i was finding.
I will bench it again after i shoot it more and get used to the rifle and skinny up the front post .
The trigger is pretty good.
Have fun out there these rifles are pretty interesting.
