Type 81 LMG: Defect + Customer Service Problem

You get more bees with honey than you do with vinegar... Sometimes you’ve got to take one on the chin. Their A rare rifle, I would be quite disappointed as well. But not so disappointed I would send it back. Might have to take it into a confident gunsmith and just have it fixed. They may man up and send you some new mags if you send them the bill. As a business owner if someone was trying to work with me, I would definitely compensate them. Give them the opportunity.

With the amount of money that they make on those mags, they could afford to send you a couple for the inconvenience of a busted grip! Good luck!

I looked at my lmg rifle and I can tighten the bolt but only loosen it a touch and then it jams tight
Upon further inspection after I removed the top cover and recoil spring I see the factory has used a punch of some sort and peened/ mushroomed the end of the bolt so it cannot be removed
Maybe check your rifles and see if it’s the same, on mine if I needed to remove the bolt I would have to remove the mushroomed end somehow

Id totally spend 3-4k on a proper SVD like rifle in 54r or 51 NATO. Unfortunately i cant see the Type 81 platform being a decent base for such an endeavor as well...

A guy on here years ago, made a SVT 40, into a Dragonuv.esk look. Back then, SVT 40's were maybe $499. Hmmm... $3/4K you say :) I found a pic from a 2015 thread. Not sure if this is the guy, The one I remember, he had a youtube video I believe. This guy says he made it, & wanted to make more..?

The problem i have with that is its still an SVT 40 at its core. And ive only ever managed to get less then desirable accuracy out of any SVT 40. For 3-4k id expect someday i could make a PSL clone out of a .308 Valmet Hunter.

Well said, most people just don't understand the costs and efforts involved with importing firearms and such. I keep seeing comments asking for Type 81s in 5.56, 7.62x54r, Dragunov clones etc. But there's littler understanding of the huge cost to tool up a factory to produce these and I doubt anybody wants to spend $3000-5000 on a rifle.

Yep, the same people that ask for this and that in this cal and that cal don't know much about how the firearms industry works. There's no magic wand that can make things happen. I bet these are also the ones that hum and ha and miss out when cool guns finally do drop - then complain about not getting one lol

I ordered a LMG phosphate and it arrived rough, the screws were all mangled, the bipod was pitted to #### and finish was missing all over it that was crudly covered with black paint that was flaking off. My gas tube top cover was blued, and again missing finish and crudely covered with paint. The blued butt plate is missing most finish, the bolt carrier is rough, wood damaged all over and the pistol grip was loose lol.

They asked for pictures and quickly offered me a refund or a replacement phosphate off the next shipment as they don't have any warranty claim rifles left.

Cod return delivery of the lmg and only 2 mags, I keep my extras as I opted for the next shipment.

It seems the LE phosphate lmgs are the ones with the issues, im wondering if I should ask them to ship me a blued version off the next shipment or risk it ..that quality control is way better and I just got a lemon ?

Non the less unacceptable for a 2g new production gun, im happy with there customer service.

Well this is concerning I hadn’t unpacked my phosphate yet because life was happening and couldn’t hit the range but after reading this thread decided to and damn looks good far but ya gaps in welds on the bipod feet, top gas tube cover is pitted underneath and blued not phosphates also looked crudely painted on half the tube, looks like lower hand guard wasn’t pinned correctly so it’s got a big gap and is holding looks off and not flush at all with the rifle and cocked down a bit and the buttpad looks blued and loss of finish now I think it’s time to send an email with pics.....

Ya seems the phosphates are a one off production with crudly used parked or painted blued parts.

Can anyone with blued lmgs confirm that they have these type of issues at all if any ?

Cheers

the gas block and the bipod seems duller finish, quite acceptable bcos they are not smooth.

lathe marks around the barrel need the bipod but no where shows flaking.

Ya so I just got off the phone with TI, I sent back the lmg today cod but I asked if this shipment is a different production run. This shipment is just that, a second shipment of the same production run. So the replacement phosphate rifles will probably still have the same issues. I opted to get a blued replacement as im a purest anyway and I didnt really like the parking thickness on the gun. Not going to wait 2 months just to get a phosphate lemon again

My phosphate is fine. Just did a full inspection because I was a bit worried. The wood on both of mine (one each) is not 100% where it meets the butt plate but easily fixable. The wood on the phosphate one is nicer, has a slightly deeper colour.

Good to hear, im just not willing to wait 2 months to roll the dice. Im fine with a blued one, actually looking at my t81 folder I actually prefer blued as a purest. Glad there are some good phosphate rifles out there tho
