Type 81 'M' Reviews, suggestions, upgrades

Have you ordered from savotta before?

How were shipping times and duty from varisteleka? Thanks!

Edit- these look tits! I have found one from savotta that is perfect but there are some shipping issues or costs it seems from reading on Reddit. And varisteleka (who is cheaper shipping option) doesn’t have the pouch I want in stock.

The selection of ak mag pouches in Canada isn't great. I ordered mine from varusteleka in Finland. Savotta also has some good looking ones. Not sure where to get a decent pouch with plastic siding though.

Varusteleka does go through a crazy amount of stock but the things that are brand new and not surplus usually get restocked eventually. I ordered all my mag pouches from varusteleka before they started stocking ones from savotta so I have yet to try ordering from savotta. I can't comment on what Reddit is saying, but you will definitely have to pay some form of duty when it comes into canada no matter where you order from. Just don't ship anything international by FedEx since they taking a stupid level of service charge to deal with the duty at the border. I'm pretty sure my orders from Varusteleka all came through DHL which has been smooth to deal with. I think a lot of places in Europe ship through them.

Edit: just tried to order something from Savotta and looks like they only deliver to europe if ordered online. You could try emailing them and see if it's possible to ship to Canada or just wait for varusteleka to get them back in stock.

I really wish you could still mount the cleaning rod with the MLok handguard on. I may do some poking about to see if it can be modded. Has anyone done anything like that yet?

The forward barrel clamp that secures the lower hand guard is going to prevent the installation of the under mount cleaning rod.
You'd need to drill a hole through the clamp right at where it hinges, essentially destroying the clamp in the process.

I suppose it is plausible that you could make a two piece clamp and then drill the lower hand guard to accept the cleaning rod.

First post, first gun, first day at the range as a member... Put 40 rounds of federal down range with an out of date safety glass prescription and made a mess of the paper. I think the purchase was worth it compared to the three different SKS I have fired, it was simply more enjoyable for me, and there's of course the "AK" cool factor.

My 81M is currently stock, I have the PDS-1 sitting on my desk but nothing to mount it on yet, so I didn't bother messing with the front post at all today. Everything cycled just fine, the stock only got caught up in my cotton t-shirt once, and I had one instance where I left it bolt open safety on and couldn't get it to move forward or come off safety. I just kept pulling the charging handle back and trying the safety until it magically went forward again.

I had previously put a laser down the bore and "measured" the straightness of the entire thing with a laser level, thankfully I got good one (minus the front sight being canted).

Now to get some modifications and dip my toes into the cheaper corrosive stuff.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new rifle !! How are you mounting the PDS-1 ? Direct side mount with m-lok pic rail on top ?

My preference would be to use a Master Mount type setup, but what is currently available of course doesn't fit with the underfolder. I'm hoping someone comes out with something new soon, but in the mean time I'm putting the TI M-LOK handguard on and putting it on that. I'm hoping it isn't too far forward to be unusable. I have a 3d print cheek riser waiting for me at a friends house too.

My previous post was meant for you but I apparently didn't click Reply with Quote: Any experience using birchwood casey tru-oil on that wood? I refinished my grandfathers 22LR (walnut) and absolutely loved how it came out, and I'm wondering how it would look on the grip.

No i havnt used that product before. I will look into it.
Post pics when you put it all together.

Hilarious that these just came out, and they're also the most commonly listed rifle for sale in the EE.

Really? For curiosity I counted 49 offers on p.1 for the Modern Semi-auto Sporting Rifles and I found 1 WTS for an underfolder, 3 OffersTT for underfolders and 1 WTS for a Type 81LMG which is not really belonging to this group. All this is like about 8% of all offers on p.1.

God damn!!! What did you use for the base coat and the stain??? Looks amazing brother!

Thanks.
I used Dupli-color high performance wheel paint (CHWP110 Copper) as basé coat. Then i used "minwax gunstock 231" and " minwax espresso" stains to brush on the pattern.. i used a coat of Minwax Polyurethane after each coat of stain, otherwise next coat would disolve and smudge the previous one.. it takes a while for stain to dry, so its a lengthy process.

Thanks for the inspiration Dmitri! Here’s my rendition using the same materials on the one of the original mags..IMG_6455.jpgIMG_6456.jpg
