Type 81 Owners Corner !

Wow, very disappointing to see that they used a fkn sleeve over the barrel. Corrosion between the barrel and sleeve will end up being a b*tch if using corrosive ammo over time as it will be pretty near impossible to clean and rinse everything away. :bangHead:

I don't think it will be a problem considering how tight it was on there It was very hard to get off

How do the side mounts attach to the rifle? Do you need to drill and tap? I found a side mount at Kelly's but not sure how it would attach.

That one looks like it's designed to bolt to the holes of a CSA VZ.... I'm guessing because of the metallurgy and fabrications of the reciever, a side mount will either need to be threaded itself, and simply bolted on from the inside of the reciever, or maybe riveted on like many AKs I believe.

The side rails have been sold as AK siderails. One is a screw on one and one is your classic rivet on one. The screw on one is similar to the UTG AK side rail (3 countersunk screws that go from outside to inside of the receiver. The nuts that secure these screws go on the inside and must be low enough to clear the blot and carrier when cycling.

The screw in one I have has only 2 domed (moderately sized) allen head screws that start on the inside of the receiver and screw into the (existing)threaded holes of the siderail itself. This has a clamping effect to secure the siderail. I have not seen this style of siderail sold for some time. When I find a new photo site, I will try to post pics.

As for the rivet mount--it is your typical 3 rivet AK rail (Roumanian style). This will also need a fair chunk of the lower rear to be grinded off to clear the Type 81 safety, and is wider than the AK type rails that are currently avail in the USA. If one wants to go thru the PIA of doing a rivet mount (Can easily be done by hand provided one has a good back-plate/jig to hold everything while hammering the rivets), I think the skinnier siderail may be the best. ht tps://ak-builder.com/images/thumbnails/280/280/detailed/1/74_scope_rail.jpg

I thought the heads of the screws/rivets (whatever one uses) conflicting with the bolt/carrier or trigger parts may have been the biggest problem--but doesn't look like it as opposed to grinding off enough of the rail to allow clearance for the safety to be used-AND to provide enough surface area for mounting of the Warsaw Pact style optics that the side rails are designed for.

Hope this gives y'all some ideas to work with....

I don't know enough about the Kellys side rail and mount--(it looks like a variant of the CSA side rail mounts) to comment

Got out to shoot it for the first time last night. Feels almost exactly the same as my CZ 858 but I would say there is less muzzle climb.

ive seen lots of videos of shooting at night and have never noticed any sparks like i see in this video. what is it, bits of barrel burning off? fire balls are one thing but sparks???
