Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

I am looking to get a Type 81, would prefer the fixed stock but seems the folding stock are the only ones available right now if purchasing new. Are the folding stock ones worth buying or should I keep looking for a fixed stock one?
Thanks

Northern elite posted today they're getting some fixed stock ones next Friday.

That depends, are you looking to keep it stock? Because for mods, the best is a fixed stock, optics ready version.

Tactical imports also still has lmg's available and they are on sale. Lot of guys like to modify those.
100 dollars more than a standard type 81 but it comes with one drum mag.
The other posting I saw about a company getting Type 81's soon, they were jacking the price up although it looks like they pulled that posting since I can't find my response to it.
Just checked and northern elite is asking 100 more than Tactical Imports charges for a type 81.

So I have been trying to find a way to mount a modern optic for a while...I managed to find a Gen 2 Midwest Industries AK mount. It slid on my original Kobra Herron arms side rail and has almost perfect clearance. Got it zeroed and seemed to hold zero having taken it off and on several times. As with anything there is pros and cons

The Pros
-Fits perfect.
-Mounts about as low as possible.
-If you have a crooked barrel this mount has a ton of adjustment.
-fits on existing Herron Arms Mounts and will almost certainly slide onto 3BarD's mounts.

The Cons
-The casing does impact the bottom of the rail and I had several instances where the case was bounced back into the chamber area causing a stove pipe.
-Not cheap and hard to find.
-will likely require some filling or trimming of the rail to rectify the casings bouncing off the rail.

All in all, i think this is a solid option...I hate to take the Dremel to my brand new mount, but after putting nearly 300 rounds down range and coming up with a few stove pipes is not ideal considering I have never had a single malfunction till now. Some friends mentioned filling an angle on the sharp edge to bounce the casing out to the side.

Anyway figured this is good info for the T-81 gang.

I may choose not to modify this mount and trade for a Kobra or post it on EE. Figured you all may have some ideas as well.

when you say it hold zero, did you try removing the plate as well?

i too wouldnt cut the real MI mount but i would with a fake MI mount that sells for $30.

3bar still has the plate for sale if you have a OR rifle

3bardproductions.com/shop

Slap a cheap AK rail on it from amazon as many did on one of the fb groups (it works)

Then there is the sigmaco hand guard on gp, much better solution if you just plan for a red dot.

TI will have a new mounting solution this year but we all already know that it will only be available with the purchase of one of the new incoming SR and LMG rifles, usual TI customer service.

I mean slid it on and off the side rail. I bet you could remove the side plate and have it not move much if any. There is not a lot of wiggle room the pins. Id obviously be confirming that before i trusted it. This side rail comes on and off with the flick of that lever once you depress the locking mechanism.

Once i had the malfunction i took it off and ran the gun a bunch to help narrow down the issue. Slid the mount back on, confirmed zero at 100m gong it was bang on. Keep in mind my t81 groups about 3 - 4moa. Hitting the small gong at 100 is zeroed to me. I didn’t go back to the bench and shoot groups.

The malfunction showed up 3 times in roughly 300 rounds. Slow motion confirmed it definitely causes the malfunction. To me thats unacceptable and needs to be addressed. I don’t have a 30 or a 400 dollar China mount, I got the MI one, its a fine mount and its quality. Im sure the china one is gonna work fine too. Anyone in Canada who ends up with this mount is likely buying it for the T81 so in the end this things getting modded.

Whats the report on the TI similar
Mount? I heard potentially rebranded Chinese mounts..those are fetching insane prices. More than i paid for this. Iv never held the TI one, so I shouldn’t say to much, but i heard they were “okay”.

I think a couple passes with the dremel and put an angle tangent to the ejection path it should just bounce the case outward instead of back in…right now its a sharp edge pointing down.

Also I have had pretty good luck with TI, my Kobra and side mount have been 100%. I had an issue with my first
kobra and TI made go for it right away. Any time
I’ve called everyones friendly and helpful.

Im probably what one may call an annoying customer with 17363 questions and they have treated me great. I have seen others with not great reviews and I wonder if people were just annoyed with thr long wait for there rifles to show up?

And now with Murray's side plate, she is complete!

Cool! How did you make that handguard? Is that a modified AK stock, modified the way GNutzGuy modified the Zhukov on YouTube?

Handguard and stock were both pulled off of one of my Vz58s when they became prohibited. The forend started out as a Vz58 quad rail; the stock was an AKS74U stock cut and welded to a Vz58 adapter (...which was all then mounted on a T81 adapter. Bubba would be proud!)

When you pop off the grenade launcher barrel, how hard it is to put it back on?
I'm thinking of getting a fake can or one of Sigmaco's threaded barrel once it comes back on stock but I'd also like to be able to put it back

Would it sit tight like it was before removing or would it be looser/easy to slip on/off?
