Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Wow, look at the height difference between the 3bard VS Herron Arms. The picatinny rail mounts are the same dimensions just different locking mechanisms. The 3bard makes the mount sit way higher. Not sure if that’s better for scopes over red dots or vice versa. Plus the Herron Arms mount is sloped downward slightly at the front. 3bard is completely level.

Ones close to true AK height, the others a SVD / AK height halfbreed lol

Sloped downwards could be beneficial for zeroing, i noticed that many Type 81s have a downward canted barrel. Trade off being that a downward canted mount looks bad and makes people ask questions haha.

In order to make a correct statement about height, you have to use the same scope mount. They are all different in height.

The 3bard rail sits higher than the Herron mount not lower as you say.

You just show different mounts, that's why it appears lower.

Be careful also with the mounts you are buying, alix sells fake Midwest Industries mounts, offered on gp for a bargain - which they actually aren't, just fake.

I just bought a scope mount for another rifle here in Canada and thought I paid too much, until I realized that the cheap mount is from alix, but fake and cheap.

Pretty much done for right now. Sigmaco handguard, TNA oversized bolt knob, Hogue AR-15 grip attached with 3D printed adapter.

Got permission from the owner to post the following build from Instagram, but they would rather I not link back to their account:

For those with fixed stocks who couldn't get a folder and don't want to get a Zhukov, this show's an interesting alternative. The pictured firearm has a SigmaCo 1913/Picatinny stock adapter with a folding 1913 to buffer tube adapter; such adapters are available for purchase from forum vendor the Shooting Edge. Alternatively, if you don't want the flexibility of a 1913 mount, you could get the AR-15 buffer tube adapter and get a folding adapter for AR-15 tube socket adapter. It is also cool to see the Sigma handguard with full extension. Looking forward to TI's handguard solution for comparison when it comes out!

Truly my favorite build!

Still a bit of a work in progress. Trying to decide if I want to drill out the rivets on the upper hand guard or just try buying a second spare and go to town on that one.

I also need to get the stock figured out and decide if I want to go with a different style or just add an extra inch onto this design.
Then of course it’s figuring out what finish I want to go with. That’s probably going to be the hardest part.

Just bought an AK74 direct bolt on grip and 90 degree both side safety from the guy who makes the replacement handguards. If its as good as his buffer tube adapter, they should be awesome!

Just to reassure the woodworkers out there that have already committed the work ;) Neither the grip or handguards are wood ^ rest easy lol

M Lok on wood?? what do yall think?

Well, just got my sigmaco 90 degree safety in the mail this morning. Took me maybe 1 minute to install and I’ve got to say the improvement is worth every penny. I really like the safety being similar to my x95, helps with muscle memory. Finish is kinda a rough texture but should smooth out as I use the rifle. 9/10 would recommend.
