Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

side view of the zhukov lower looks great, top view not so much.

i cant wait to see what you come up with when its done.

Yeah it's not done so just the skeleton of the top handguard at the moment. It's functional but going to be too hot to touch after some rounds so I'll either put a rail on it, or ut the Magpul Zhukov cover on it too.

Somehow someway it'll be done :)

Got the rail. The length and height are perfect so now to figure out how to attach it to the steel handguard plate.... Hmmm...

Not sure about others but my top handguard is pretty tight and solid. It only has movement when I raise it to 5.

It has no movement at all. You don't think it'll work even with a red dot and a 5moa rifle? I was thinking to side mount like yours but want to keep it as light weight as possible.

Sks gas tube mounts dont hold zero. The only thing that holds the front of the cover down is some light duty tin on the type 81. But as a 5 moa gun, maybe it will be suffice.

So I posted a photoshopped image of a type 81 a while back as a sort of concept photo of some mods I wanted to make to my type 81. Summer kept me busy so the project went to the back burner but I was finally able to make some leaps and bounds.

Plan is to drill and tap a hole on the underside of the front sight block for a set screw, take it to the range and get it on paper before setting it in with Loctite and drilling new holes for the cross pins. Once that's done ill thread the muzzle on and use a crush washer to keep it in place. I took the rifle out and put about 50 rounds through it after I removed the FSB since the gas block is now open on the front but had no issues and the brass seemed to fall in the same place.

The ak-74 stock fit in no problem with some rasp and file work, the simulated tang on the top side was just some sheet metal filed and blued and a screw from the original T81 butt plate.

For the safety im thinking I really like the original so I modified it for a 90 degree throw like an ar. I don't think a real ak safety would work with the short throw and the fact the receiver side isn't flat, so if it finds a home on the rifle it will likely just be for looks and screwed, pinned or tack welded in place.

Looks excellent! Pretty much wat I would've done IF I got a fixed stock. I presume half of ur FSB is suspended on the barrel ?? There isnt much space behind the muzzle before u hit that step down ... could u post a pic of wat the open end of ur gas block looks like? I was curious what would be exposed if the FSB were to be removed.

That looks AWESOME!!!!! Very good looking clone you got there

I just picked up a 5 rounder prototype mag from TI 2 weeks ago. Gotta get a pic up but it doesn't feel right compared to the 30's

The front of the gas block looks pretty much like what you would expect, its a round hole and just under 1/4" in is the chrome lined face of the gas plug. It really doesn't look that bad since recessed inside the hole but I may even file off the chrome on the face of the plug and blue it since I clean my guns anyway.

I only put 1/2" of threads on the muzzle for the slant brake and that allows pretty much full contact along the length of the FSB, I would say going with full threading (about 5/8" or 3/4" depending) would leave plenty of room before the barrel steps down.

The thicker part of the barrel near the muzzle is .004 smaller in diameter than the id of the FSB but installing with a set screw and replacing the cross pins is enough to take care of that imo.

Stripped and refinished the furniture immediately after taking posession. Satisfied enough with the turnout. I also realized just now how closely it matches my avatar! Looking forward to doing this on my fixed when it arrives.

Thanks for the info.... really on the fence about whether or not I'd do the same with mine. Ur rather excellent mods really do bring the type 81 closer to an AK appearance. But at the same time I quite like the AK/type 81 hybrid look of my folder ..... oh the decisions lol
