Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

This thread should be stickied... the Type 81SA is now basically the second most popular 7.62x39 rifle in Canada. But yet there are no stickys addressing it haha

It's not because of rifle, it's thanks to the libs. Wait and soon $8k Valmets will be most popular 7.62x39 rifles in Canada.

Should delete or move the Type 97 sticky and put this thread in its place. Despite the Type 97 being a "red rifle" at its core. It seems 90% of comments regarding it are made in Black rifles....

no, better candidates are vz58/cz858 helpful hints, cleaning, camo and gremlin stickies. why would any owner bother looking at these stickies? i might ask them to remove my helpful hints and have it replaced with something T81.

I doubt u really can, short of pressing / riveting in a new trunnion. There is honestly zero cons to the bend unless u want to mount optics via the receiver.

Parallel to the bore, or vice versa. Would be my best guess. Ive noticed that my "bent" Type 81sa folder also has a significant cant down in the barrel as well in relation to the flats on the receiver. This is most likely caused by improperly punched rivet hole locations in the stamped steel of the receiver or trunnion. Also hard to fix.

Yeah it would be a pain to fix, and it certainly wouldn't be a simple toolshed adventure. Drill front trunnion rivets heads out, punch rivets cores out, either fill out and redrill the receiver or enlarge the holes and machine to custom offset rivets (shouldered without tapper) to put in place and repress. Not to mention you'd absolutely have to retouch/redo the finish on the receiver. And you damn well hope you did it all perfectly and didn't overshoot.

so despite bent it is working ...

So i take it it's a receiver issue, because the holes weren't drilled correctly? I'm trying to figure out exactly what the problem is. Because if it's just the receiver, maybe it could be fixed by replacing it, and there's probably a way to get Polytech to stamp out a few extra on the production run.

Have been considering taking off the barrel sleeve and put on a muzzle device lately. Want to ask how much of a weight-saving you are getting out of it, i.e. how heavy is the sleeve is?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: nvm, found the answer, 150g for future references.

Anyone know where I'd find a spare wooden lower handguard for my LMG? I'm working with an American buddy to get a proper dong made rather than modifying an AK one but I need an OG one to use as a template/pattern.

For that matter, does anyone know if the rifle handguards fit the LMG's or is the barrel too thick? If they fit it's probably easier to just grab one of those someone has replaced with whatever magpul stuff they could fit.

Lower handguards are not interchangeable. On top of different barrel dia, the ferrules are also shaped differently. LMG is square, rifle is round.

Is it possible to get someone to 3d scan the part, and then have the Amerfriend use the file or even 3d print a copy for reference?

Out of curiosity, how much would Type 81sa owners be willing to pay for a new wooden lower handguard whether is be a dong, or palm swell style.... un finished ?

I'd pay up to fifty bucks or so for a palm swell one.. Also, a RPK-style stock is an interesting upgrade.
