Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

I'm thinking about removing my GL sleeve and threading the barrel for one of Kodiak's brakes.

Has anyone done this yet? What thread pitch are people using, and are there any CGN recommended companies who could do the threading?

5/8-24 is the standard pitch. Can be done at home but ideally the barrel needs to be turned to the major diameter of the thread. The die holder should have a bore guide as well

I’m under the understanding the barrel diameter is to small for the standard 5/8-24 thread a lot of people thread them for M14x1 right hand thread (vz58) or 14x1 left hand (ak)

If u do thread it for 5/8" it may be a partial thread, where as the M14x1mm thread will most likely require the barrel to be turned down on a lathe or with an annular cutter.

I think I remember this from one of your videos. It feels familiar anyway...

Whats your reasoning behind this ? minor diameter for external 5/8-24 UNEF = 0.5742 / 0.5625 " i measured my Type 81sa rifle muzzle OD at 14.44mm or .569 How did I screw this up ?

ah, you didnt do the physical test. i just received a new flash hider and a new brake, two different brand and both measured the inside diameter of .579 so its bigger than the T81 barrel diameter which means they will slide over and not even touch.

Useless/useful observation:

Barrel base diameters are different for the Blued LMG and Parkerized LMG, .821 vs .841"
Did not check near the muzzle though on both to compare

what has the rifle finishing has to do with it? the diameter are suppose to be the same. maybe the cutting tool was wore, im not sure.

Kindov tempted to order a 7.62x39 green mountain barrel and turning the steps to fit an AK FSB, lower handguard ferule and possibly a gas block. Then id just machine a new piston cup system to match. However im not sure if the heights will be notably off. Those changes would greatly improve the aesthetics of the Tabuk Sniper build. And who knows, if I properly head space it right maybe even improve accuracy. Was the LMG barrel OD where it presses in .821 or .841" ?

Yup. I was mistaken - and mislead people - my apologies! Here is the real LMG shank diameter, consistent for blued and parkerized models
