Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

Is it normal for Type 81s to spit fire lol
This is the second time I took it out to the range shooting Norinco red boxes and every shot would also launch sparks all the way to the berm (and you'd see it bounce off).

The guys next to me were firing an SKS, also with Norinco red boxes and I didn't see theirs throw any sparks. It looks cool and all but is that just the gunpowder?

Don't think these are sold by a vendor on here, but Misty Mountain Supplies has AK regular and reverse dong lower hand guards which can be modded to fit the Type 81, for those handy enough to do so, but not handy enough to scratch build one.

better metal in what way?
That small details, less tool marks. The recievers have a more crisp bulge for the trunnion. The rivets are squashed properly on se, the blondes the rivets can be badly canted or not squeezed enough. Some of the se have better fitting dust covers

ah thanks. do the special edition versions still have misaligned barrels?

Dunno how to tell you this man, but those sparks at the end of the range aren't coming from your barrel. They are coming from the round you're firing striking the metal baffles down range. I can tell because your target is at 10m and some of your rounds are hitting the head of the silhouette. That firing angle means baffle strikes at the 25m or 30m mark.

As for is it normal for Type 81's to spit fire? Yep, lol.

Alright finally got the hand guard mounted...Fits great, the m lok inserts had very little wiggle room where they could be placed...the pin in the front was a pain to work around... I think if i did it again i would opt for one slot as the rear end of things required me to modify my cleaning rod retainer clip as well. I don't know why I'm married to my cleaning rod, but i really like having it with the rifle..

Other than that yea works as intended... I'm not sure how the soft wood will hold up to heavy abuse, as it is definitely not as rigid as an aluminum handguard or even a plastic one... time will tell, but i don't think this rifle is going to the trenches anytime soon. For an event where there is a night shoot this will serve me perfectly...probably would not be my go to war solution for a light tho, as this wood is not super robust and dents very easily.

Truthfully this rifle has never been fired and was intended as a back up rifle if my primary T81 ever dies...tho the rifle will likely outlive me.... SHssshhhh don't tell my wife.

Damn that’s ###y, just the right amount of form and function

Almost got the T81 SR set up. Reinforced the stock with a threaded insert and installed the 3barD brass deflector. Just waiting on the Mcwistle extended mag release and the 90 degree safety from Sigmaco.

Lookin goooood. You can also explore the option of sticking adhesive backed velcro (the fuzzy side) to where the casings will strike the deflector to improve the harmonics.

So I took my T81 out for the first time today. I've got 10 small mags and I found about 4 of them gave me issues. Under recoil the mag release would crank down so hard to the point that I would have to wack the release on the table to get it to loosen. I'm intending to check the dimensions of the lip that engages with mag release on bad mags and see how they compare to the good ones. If the bad ones are thicker I'll polish them down a bit. I have an order in for an extended mag release but that's likely a few weeks away yet.

Edit: Oh and despite the fact that I've put a threaded insert into the SR stock it still cracked slightly along the pins.

I think the wood is quite stressed around the pin holes regardless of further stock bracing. Noticed on mine the receiver walls are swelled where the pins were drived thru indicating some level of severe interference. Mine hasn't cracked yet and i do have a long SS screw bracing it. But despite that i do expect to someday see a crack there. Will that effect the retention of the stock to the gun? I doubt it since i figure the SS screw is taking most of the load. Nonetheless appearently the gen2 stocks are not too far out so hopefully it all becomes a non issue for most in the near future.
