Definitely not, it’s very easy once you get the hang of it. Try it like this, use your thumb while gripping the stock. Give it slight downward pressure towards the front to clear the rear sight block

Very easy to do, remove safety and file a flat between the two positions
5/8 24 doesn't go on. Like 1 thread then stops
I put enough pressure on it that any more and things would be permanent
I saw one selling for $100
well considering these are AK mags which require fitting and a magpul AK MOE mag (which also needs fitting) can be had for like 35$......
No kidding, I’m almost at a crate exclusively through p mags and have had ZERO issues. They maybe took 5 minutes to fit each one, very minimal. They fit nicer to, lock in smooth like butter with zero wobble. Substantially lighter and I had to confirm my self, yes you can run them over

Has anyone welded up the old side so you don't have a 3 position selector and its just a hard stop at the 90deg?

I personally would just get this but I assume you're asking these questions because you have the tools to modify the selector.
Yeah I do, I maybe would have considered that but anything 3d printed turns me away
Yeah, shouldn't have much difficulty. I put a PST gen 2 2-10 on a buddy's Type-81 LMG a while back and went 5 for 10 on a 2/3 IPSC (12"x18") at 625 yds using corrosive chicom ammo. Was honestly a bit surprised, haha.
CanadianFirearmNoob on YouTube shows off a 3D Printed pistol grip and his implementation of GNutzGuy's paracord cheek rest in the below video. Also demos the rock and lock motion required for the Type 81 / AK style magazines, though he doesn't know the proper term, and shows how an improperly seated magazine looks.

For those who want to keep most of the wood look, could you extend the existing pistol grip with a 3D-printed extension to allow for a bigger hand, or would it be too weird of a mix of aesthetics? Not talking a glue on, actually using a longer bolt with a extension that contours around the existing grip and stays in place.

YouTuber BarelyTactical has done a video on how to modify AK PMags to work in the Type 81 (with no bolt hold open, since this doesn't exist on AK mags). The instructions should also work with metal mags, those of course may need stronger tools to modify.
