Type 81 vs AK47

As long as these are sub $1000 they will be a big hit. I just hope the non-res version is available without too much trouble. I don't need another range gun.

So I just went to WIKI and did some measurements on my own SKS.

1. "Detachable mags" - I can convert my SKS to detach mags if I want, but the stripper clips continue to work very well either way w/o any feed issues whatsoever. Those huge 30rnd mags are a PITB for hunting carry whereas the the sleek little drop mag on a SKS is a much better system.

2. "Weight" - If I remove the bayonet from my SKS, I come very close to the weight on a Type 81.

3. "Length" - Looks like the SKS is a whopping 1.4" longer. WOW!! .... That's huge.

4. "Looks" - Who cares about looks anyways as both are military based rifles? Looks are not an issue unless one like to dress up with their rifles in hand.

I'm picking up what you're laying down Sir. Naysayers be damned lol
I was thinking the same. Every time a new gun comes into the country there's people that buy them the second they get on shore then gloat about how they have the cash to buy them etc
I take your approach, what is this thing? What does it do? What makes it different from what's already available in this country and most important at what cost?
It's basically an SKS with the physical stock features of an AK47 as far as I can see.
It's real advantages of the 81 are moot in this country; shorter barrel (original makes it restricted so NR will be heavier and longer barrel...) increased magazine capacity (limited to 5 in Canada anyway) detachable magazine (again who cares it's pinned to 5 and now you have a gigantic banana magazine hanging out of the rifle adding empty useless weight and space) I can load the SKS with stripper clips pretty damn fast as is. Sight radius and sights are the same so no improvement there. Scope mounting looks to be just as much a PIA so again no difference there.

The more I look at it and think about it rationally the T81 in the eventual NR configuration is just going to be an SKS in a factory made AK47 dress at almost 5 times the price (more if you consider the Chinese SKS prices on the EE) The SKS is about as reliable a gun as you can get in a semi auto carbine so I'm not buying that the type 81 is any more or less reliable. It's just going to tickle the fancy of the die hard Canadian sore spot about not being able to own an AK47 but being able to own an SKS and now going to be able to own an SKS that looks the most like an AK47 as possible without still being one lol
Still cool to see new options in the country but I'm out on this one personally. Will stick with the Chinese SKS at $175.

So I shouldnt of got a Rasheed becuase its almost like a AG-42/ SKS, shouldn't of got a SKS-D because its just another SKS. Shouldn't of got a VZ52/57 because its almost a SKS...

All these people talking trash about a gun they never held or fired makes me laugh. I hate norincrap with a passion. But just like the T97 I will wait until I have one in hand before calling it crap. Even if I don't like it it will be a nice addition to my collection of 7.62x39 rifles.

As I understand it, the PLA, like the U.S., culturally emphasizes individual rifle marksmanship, in their case probably driven by a traditional need to conserve scarce ammo supplies. That's why they preferred the SKS and Type 63 up until their Vietnam intervention. After being taught by the largely Type 56 AK armed Vietnamese that volume of fire is important as well, thus they developed a hybrid rifle.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of accuracy could be wrung out of it with decent ammo?

Now that we have thrashed this subject out, down to bedwetting, would it be okay for me to ask about how a Comblock (SKS, AK-47, T-81)
compares to an AR platform? Or should I start another thread? I have never shot or even held an AR-15 because: (plastic, restricted, expensive)
but I have gotten curious because of the threads showing up in General Discussion regarding problems, usually case stuck or blown out, kind of stuff.

This guy gets it.

Hardly any rifle in the last 50 to 60 years has been anything new. Most are bits and pieces of things already done.

If the left leaning, anti gun, granola eating, tree huggin hippies hate them...i want one!! Mine.better be the scariest lookin one in the country too!!

Thats sort of a big question.

One can assume the Chinese found the type 81 superior to the AK since they replaced it with that. On an aside, AK mags are as abundant and cheap as AR mags in the U.S., so that should be a big plus.

Glad these will be coming in ..... For me it will be a matter of price point as I don't have the budget that others do, but by the time these make it to market, who knows?

In the spirit of comparing the 81 to the AK, lets take a trip down memory lane to 1990 or so, when Chinese AKs were non restricted.

In 1990 or so, you could buy a Chinese SKS for $99 bucks. You could also grab a crappy Indian FAL for that price.

You could get a Chinese AK for $400 with a couple of mags, or spend another hundred or so and get the heavy barrelled RPK clone wifh two mags and a drum, and just for nostalgias sake, I want to mention you could get an arsenal refinished Ishapore FAL for $300.

So, comparitively speaking, if those heavy barrel type 81s come in at under a thousand bucks with 4 mags....its a pretty fair price considering what Chinese AKs would probably go for if they were available these days.
