Ultimax 100 Saw/lmg

Nothing fancy as far as its technology goes.Uses long recoil. This means that the bolt has more space in the receiver to travel rearward and doesn't impact the rear of the receiver, the Automatic shotgun known as the AA-12 uses this type of system also,as do some antique machine guns . Earlier versions were without a quick change barrel but the newer ones have this feature.
Its been used by both Croats and Serbs during the civil war in the early 90's.

Not exactly a long recoil system. In long recoil, the barrel recoils with the bolt the full length of recoil, the bolt is retained, the barrel runs forward extracting the cartridge, then the bolt is released to run forward and chamber the next round. In the ultimax, the barrel is not recoiling with the bolt. The bolt is however given more room to stroke backwards so it does not impact the rear of the reciver, giving a usefull rate reduction as well as enhancing controllability. The only mechanical impact imparted during the firing sequence is the bolt striking the breech face and locking, which will have the effect of forcing the muzzle down and countering (somewhat ) recoil.

AR mags in a C9 sound like a good idea in a pinch, but in my experience, a C9 with a C7 Thermold mag (issue mags at the time) = catastrophic failure every single time.

Nope, they're fine. There's even an open bolt AR variant.

Negev has a folding stock and is belt fed. Though I havent heard of many negev contracts past Israel. Wonder if they can make a semi of that!

Your confusing open bolt blow back with open bolt locked breech. Most open bolt smgs are straight blow back, mg's are usually either recoil operated (historicly) or gas operated (most modern designs) with the bolt held reward between firings to allow flow thru air cooling and to avoid cook offs when hot

Looks like a good truck gun.

I'll will be asking them once the Tavors are rolling. The only thing stopping it may be the IMOD, but it wasn't an issue with the Tavor, so who knows.

they weren't on the market when the SAW was being purchased. And as for loading the drum, well a hundred round spring is going to be stiff, isn't it? the marine corp feels it's preferable to a belt flaping around, and it saves weight over the belt to boot......

I'm pretty sure they were around when the USMC was buying the SAW. The Ultimax is a pretty old design, I remember seeing some promo video years and years ago for it where they had some Chinese (Singaporean) girl firing one with the butt against her nose to show how little recoil it had.

It may have been around but not ready to enter any trials. It just missed the SAW trials, hence the reason it wasn't chosen.

Nope, they came out after the trials finished......

you need to do better than "duh we already have open bolt semi's..." try looking at the trigger mechanism then figure a way to make it semi. then try and find a way to make it fit in the rifle.
