Unofficial 12ga Slug Penetration Comparison

Gatehouse, shotgun was an 870 Police with ghost ring sights and fixed IC choke ..

Speaking as a guy whose bear safety gun is choked 'cylinder,' I have to wonder how that would affect the results seen here.

Kodiakjack, I did test the accuracy of all the slugs in the picture that I posted.
The Challengers were the worst for me. They gave me random flyers. But maybe I will give them another try …. maybe I just had a bad batch.

But I have heard from others that the attached wad sometimes gets damaged in the barrel when fired, and that is supposed to cause the flyers … because the wad stays with the slug. But I think I will try them once more just to be sure of my results ….

Well .... I ordered a couple more boxes of the Challenger slugs, and they arrived yesterday. So I open the first box and this is what I found.

The wad of one round was completely mangled and to a level hat the powder would come out of the round. There was powder all over in that one box. Further the round had such a bulge that I could not even chamber it.

I guess that would explain the flyers ....

:-(

Reading through the thread, I was getting sold on Challenger slugs until I saw these posts. When it comes to shotgun shells, a flyer slug is bad enough but a misfire is beyond the pale. And then defective shells are found unfired. A box of 10 of those things costs $25 here and that's the quality you get? NO thanks.

Ive only ever seen them in boxes of 10 myself. I have a pack i should give them a look and see how they look inside.

Always good to see tests like this.

I'll throw in a little contribution from a recent shoot, ammunition was a 2 3/4" Remington sabot slug (Barnes 437 grain copper) fired from a 20" rifled barrel, target was a 20oz CO2 bottle with approximately 5mm thick aluminum walls shot at 50 yards.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I was impressed by the Challenger right up until the misfire and flyers appeared. A slug is either for hunting or self defense and misfires and flyers unacceptable!

For those who want better quality control for that one shot when it counts ... you can load those Gualandi slugs yourself ...

1.) Sporteque.ca has the Gualandi slugs in stock and for 12ga (DGS-12), 20ga, and 16ga ...

2.) They also sell the "Ballistic Product Slug Loading Manual 7th" and which has published recipes for those ...

DGS12.jpg

Here just an example:

  • Hull: 12ga Federal 3"
  • Primer: Fed209A
  • Powder: Longshot
  • Charge: 41 grains
  • Crimp: Roll Crimp
  • Projectile: DGS-12 / 1 1/8 oz
  • Pressure: 10800 PSI
  • Velocity: 1650 FPS

That's quite a feat alone providing this superior to foster
slug in a 12 gauge. It's another big step selling these in any sub gauge.
Kudos.

Just tried some of the challengers. God damn they kick! Loosened my stock nut. Tightened and puy some blue locktite on the bastard lol

3 shots touching at 40yrds, adjusted the scope and in the bullseye. Nothing in the area i hunt is further then this yardage pretty much.

IC choke Mossberg 500 24" ported barrel
Bushnell Trophy 1.75-4 x 32mm

Recovered a slug that had grazed one tree and almost went through a 2nd.

I wouldnt want to get hit by one of these.

Thanks for sharing .... and nice group you've got there!! Good shooting .... !!

Over 20 years ago I did a penetration comparison for 3" Triple 000 Buck shot vs 1 oz slugs, both Federal blue box shells, out of a Winchester Defender 12 ga.
I fired several rounds of each at 3/4" plywood at 12 yards and found that only the odd pellet (and not from every round) would completely penetrate through the plywood.
It was enough to convince me that slugs were the only way to go for bear defense.

Thanks, very informative post. Would be interesting to see how the Federal mini slugs compare to the pricier Aguila ones. I picked up some recently, but haven’t had time to test them.

Penetration Test the 3rd

Last week end I finally got around to testing another 5 slugs. For one, I wanted to test lower velocity slugs that might have potential for penetration and that I could shoot and control out of my Tac-14. And then I was able to get a hold of a box of Lightfield Commander IDS Plus slugs and which exhibit impressive stats. This Lightfield slug is heavier than the Challenger slug … and has a higher velocity. So, the Lightfield has more energy going down range and I had high hopes that this slug might outperform the Challenger. But ….

I used the same method of testing as in the first test … stacking eight spruce boards, 1.5 inches thick, and shooting with my 870 Police and with IC choke from around 8 meters.

From left to right:

1.) RWS Rottweil Brenneke
2.) Lightfield Commander IDS Plus 3”
3.) Winchester Rackmaster
4.) Federal Deep Penetrator
5.) Winchester BRI Sabot

And here is the result:

Link to highres image:

1.) RWS Rottweil Brenneke penetrated 4 boards
2.) Lightfield Commander IDS Plus penetrated 4 boards
3.) Winchester Rackmaster penetrated 4 boards
4.) Federal Deep Penetrator penetrated 4 boards
5.) Winchester BRI Sabot penetrated 5 boards

And here the recovered projectiles:

A couple of observations:

The Lightfield Commander IDS Plus has probably the highest energy of all the slugs tested. However, it mushroomed and flattened a lot and ripped impressive holes into board 2 and 3. But the slug lost it’s energy there and was lacking penetration.

The RWS Rottweil Brenneke slug (projectile) is identical to the Rio Brenneke. Both look exactly the same, have the same weight, … both have “Original Brenneke” embossed on the slug, and the recovered slugs after shooting look pretty much the same.

The Winchester Rackmaster slug as well flattened and mushroomed quite a bit.

Here are the velocities:

1.) RWS Rottweil Brenneke: 1427 FPS
2.) Lightfield Commander IDS Plus: 1700 FPS
3.) Winchester Rackmaster: 1700 FPS
4.) Federal Deep Penetrator: 1350 FPS
5.) Winchester BRI Sabot: 1350 FPS
