Someone with the appropriate license would have to answer that - perhaps Marstar, who has just about every possible permission would be able to tell you if it's possible. try firing a PM to John. My understanding is that the prohib has to come from outside Canada, but I've been wrong before.

The OP never said the gun was never registered.

In Canada handguns are registered since 1934

So chances are the registration certificate for the gun is in the deceased belongings somewhere.

Wow lots of replies. Thanks everyone for their input. Seems like the important factor is "Is the gun registered?" Unfortunately the answer is No. We found the gun in a filing cabinet under some papers. We also found a bunch of rifles. None of which were ever registered. Not that they have to be now. It seems like since it was never registered that it would need to be destroyed as it cannot be registered now. The executor of the estate is my wife's uncle. He is an ass. Talking with him is like talking with a block of concrete. Not productive.
 
I really doubt the gun was never registered, theres probably a green registration certificate somewhere in his belongings.

Things like that happens all the time.

Unless it was smuggled into the country, it was registered.
One phone call will determine if it is in the system.

Green slip guns had to re-registered into the system, largely because the RCMP spent years destroying their registration applications rather than keeping them. So, green slip or not, if it didn't get into the system in the early 2000's, it's not in the system. Sorry.

Even if it was not reregistered into the new system at the time, a prohib pistol with his old green registration certificate could be reregistered, i know because i did it.

Sorry but your wrong. I have several 12(6)s that previous owners failed to reregister and lost the right to own them.
 
Are you sure it is 22 and not .32?
Keep looking for the old green slip.
Anybody know when the 22 came out, I know it was not in the early years.
