Awesome! Thank you so much. I believe that they just might work.

I too contacted them on Friday or Saturday (using their "contact box" rather than email, so I have no email copy) but I think that I just asked them if the cartridge was compatible dimensionally with the Rossi 92 action. They didn't answer, but your more specific question certainly worked well. Thanks again. I'm picking-up a box of them in Calgary on Thursday, and will post the results when I get home. In the meantime, I'll try to research the Rossi-spec maximum OAL. It'll be close, but that chunky slug profile might be a deal-breaker.

No problem. I'm watching this thread for a couple of reasons and I'm also interested in HSM ammo. I haven't noticed it here in BC but I haven't been looking hard either. Now I will.
Good luck. I hope it works out.

Hi KF,

Well, I just got back from feeding the horses and I'd received a lengthy (325 word) email from Steve Young ... of ww*.stevesgunz.com ... a super thorough explanation of the relevant history and engineering factors that ended with him saying, "All that said, I have tried those same bullets and they worked in some Rossi 92’s but not others."

I answered ...

"Hi Steve,

Thank you very much for the super-thorough (and very speedy) answer. You’re probably a very busy guy.

I’m driving down to Calgary (about 100 miles) on Thursday to pick-up a box, and I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. I’d originally ordered two boxes @ $65 apiece, but I’ve decided to “hedge my bet” a little bit. I’ll let you know how things work out.

And if they don’t work? Well, I’ve got an instant reason to go buy a big honkin’ sixgun … , right?

Once again, many thanks for your time and help."

And I'll obviously post the results into this thread as well.

Check out Ammo Supply. I got two boxes of them from them and they carry the HSM Ammo now. At least the 44 Mag.

hsm anwser KeltecFan 1.635" so you clear for it , i just finish to try some different lenght in my rossi , and is 1.685" maximum lenght with 300 gr hornady bullet , so i don't know if a large metplat bullet can have problem but i will try it .
And i receive answer from rossi technician , if you wanted longuer ammo , just need to change the cartridge lifter for the 454 casull , like i say before ,but now is more official . with .454 casull that go to 1.75" easyer if is not more .

So does anyone out there want to part with their original stock? I know a lot of guys have full stocked these beauties to make them a sweet carbine. I, in my wisdom kept the original stock and went to a saddle maker for a custom holster and bullet belt.... Then I noticed a crack in the stock.... Hit me up if anyone wants to work out a deal, Thanks

Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the stock ... is it out of warranty? I too like the stock in the original form ... could not imagine diluting its handiness. But I totally understand the other "human need" to tweak and personalize ... :)

Ya I was thinking of injecting some glue in there with a syringe, just not sure how it'll hold up, the crack originates from one of the butt plate screw holes. And yes warranty is prolly long gone...

The bear load doesn't like to cycle too well. Tried it first hand. These like rounded ammunition.

Work-around. First round Bear load, the rest, cheaper stuff. Make the first shot count.

HSM 325 Bear Load .45 LC....

My .44 Mag seems to do well with anything rounded and Truncated Cone. What type of bullet is HSM using?

The ones that I bought from AmmoSupply in Calgary are WFN (Wide Flat Nose) Gas Check 305 gr. hardcast lead, and they cycle fine in my Wanstall's-tuned (with the Steve's Guns kit) Ranch Hand.

HSM .44 Magnum "Bear Load"

Bullet = 305 gr hard-cast wide flat nose

Muzzle Velocity = 1260 fps

Muzzle Energy = 1075 ft.-lb.

***********************************************************

Both Remington and Winchester regular .44 Magnum …

Bullet = 240 gr. JSP

Muzzle Velocity = 1180 fps

Muzzle Energy = 741 ft.lb.

Do the math. That's 45% more smack. Maybe use two hands … :)

Right mine is not stock either now that I think about it :) I worked a lot with Steve :) I probably have the only pistol gripped (deluxe stock) mares leg here :)

I'm curious to know how legit those numbers are. All logic would suggest that a heavier bullet with a generally similar propellant would be moving at less velocity, because the charge has more load to push down the barrel.

Speculating, but maybe HSM is giving performance numbers from a 44 rifle and the latter are using a revolver?

If not, and those are out of the same barrel, then HSM's Bear Load cartridge is certainly a monster of a recipe.

Hey Petamocto,

You make a good point. Them numbers come from a variety a sources ... please feel free to "vet" them ... and share whatever you find.

I was a Science teacher for many years, so I welcome such rigour.

Here is my feed issues.

HSM 325 .45 Colt 'Bear Load'. Seems to be a little too long. Would like to run this ammo easier with this gun.

-Bonus Marks for anyone that can Identify the audio track I threw on there.
