UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

*Gun Belt Update*

Hey all,
I took the first gunbelt to a trusted friend today for some criticism and was told, plain and simple, "Nice belt, but too light for any kind of real use." He went on to say that, if you were only wearing the belt to the range once in a while, then maybe it would be ok. But as it stands right now he felt it to be too light for long term use, saying it would soon twist and sag under the weight of a mares leg and holster. He also stated that what was really needed was a double layer of leather to stand up over the long run. This has caused me to rethink my approach and manufacturing processes. There will be a change in the prices as I will not offer a single layer belt for actual carry use. If someone wanted one then I will make it, with the understanding that I DON'T recommend it for rough use.
I will keep this one for show and tell purposes. This weekend I will start again on a proper, double layer, belt for heavy usage. Hopefully I will be making templates for holsters soon too.
Sorry for any delay, just wasn't right to sell something not up to the task.:(
Cheers,
spacesaver

I like the way you work !

yea its too bad all that fantastic work went to waste :( but at least he found that out and is being honest about it!

Thanks spacesaver, look forward to the next belt looking just as good, no pressure :p

Good thinking Spacesaver.

Maybe some stiff material, plastic etc could even go between the layers. Galco does this with their belts.

And Foxer, what round would you recomend for Koolaid defence?

And Foxer, what round would you recomend for Koolaid defence?

Flamethrower and a glass-break hammer as backup.

But - as there are some legal issues around edc'ing a flamethrower, I'd reccomend a mare's leg in 44 mag with 240 grainers - and don't stand near any walls :D

You forgot one small thing.

"Oh YEAH!!!"

The wall collapses, in comes the big jug.

"ka-shook-shook BOOM!" you blast him.

"POP!" he explodes. Koolaid gushes everywhere...

And your shoes get died red!

Need gumboots when encountering koolaid man. Maybe a hat too, or you could get an Emo hairdo...

Babyseal, no information of value to add from your own testing????

You have never done it have you???

Being sceptical is a good thing. That is what drives me to find things out. However, I have found that being sceptical on a subject with no personal experience leads to poor guessing and they are just that, guesses untill you actually try them out.

You are guessing.

I have experience comparing water tests to other types of tests and actual results on game.

Prove me wrong if you like!!! I would love it.

I shot the .45 colt Leverevolution out of a 20" rifle barrel into wet newspaper and it opened up quite well. I think the velocity was around 1050fps.

The chronographed rounds in the video were only averaging 870fps.

This helps confirm my theory in a previous post that the flex tips were really built for the higher velocities longer bbl lever action rifles produce.

These bullets are likely right on the threshold of velocity needed for expansion. I have played with this before. In cases like this it is not uncommon to get a few bullets that will open and a few that don't when shot into the same medium. IF you step the velocity up a bit,, or make the medium ever so slightly harder the bullets will open every time.

I feel that running a bullet right at the threshold limits for expansion is not good enough for hunting. If the shot is a bit longer that anticipated or no bones are hit the results could be unfavorable..

Yeah, I wouldn't personally hunt with that load. I wouldn't trust it. I think the bullet itslef is a good design but it is not going fast enough out of a rifle due to being designed to work in old revolvers.

I think that you would be fine hunting as long as you kept the distances short.
Velocity is quite similar to the old black powder muskets.
Besides if a 44 Magnum is considered a suitable round for grizzly bears defense why wouldn't you use it!
Anyways it is just my opinion.

I would hunt with a handloaded .45 colt in a 20" rifle just not any of the factory loadings available up here. I have no doubt it would work at (very) close range but why chance it?

I put my name down for the 44 Magnum and I will put a but stock on it for bear defense as I work in the mining exploration industry.
You could always make a trip here to Queen Charlotte islands and hunt our little Bambis.
Most of them are harvested with .22lr(not that I am recommending it but there is no disputing it is effective)
my stepfather used to poach Whitetail and mule deer with a 22 short( BC interior )
45 colt would definitely be a much better alternative to a 22.

Seeing as how there guns like the Taurus Judge on the market that are .45 LC and .410 interchangeable, I'm wondering how feasible it would be to get the chamber reamed to accept .410 shells and whether or not the action be able to load and cycle the longer round? I guess it would all depend on how much space is available on the lifter.

My MARES LAIG will be for work I will be able to write it off on my taxes!
Just something for everyone who is purchasing them for work hanging on to your receipts.
Because it is a legitimate safety tool for your job.
I believe you can write off 500 bucks!!!!!
