UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

From the videos, it looks like it's possible to make single, aimed hits without too much trouble. SO hunting with it should be okay...

Dont' know about multiple hits on a charging grizzly though:p

Still rather have a revolver or full stock for a defense gun.

10 percent is a little pessimistic....

Neither the shooters nor that clip in general were flattering for the mare's leg though, and not saying you disagree... That mirrored about my opinion of the mare's leg. A revolver or a carbine puts it to shame. It's a neat toy, one I'd play with for a day, but making real plans for one is bound to be a let down.

They did ok considering it was likely their first times shooting it. The real challenge seems to be working the action quickly without the butt anchoring the gun to the body....also it would appear they were shooting light cowboy loads so anyone thinking of heavy loads should add a bit more recoil!

I know some people think lasers are gimmicks but I think a laser light combo on one of these would be pretty useful and would allow shots to be made quicker from the hip with the gun anchored against the body Josh Randal style.

Looking at the videos, I'd be more concerned with the cases not being thrown clear and causing a jam than anything.

Another reason to use the spin reload, throws cases right out of the chamber AND chicks dig it. Chicks also dig bullet wounds in arm pits. Might blind yourself if you spin it with a laser sight on though, but chicks dig eye patches too so you might be ok.

This mare's leg thing is really shaping up.

I believe the actual quote is

Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory... lasts forever.
-- Shane Falco (The Replacements)

Scars only count if there's Glory involved in getting them.

Well hopefully we'll all be able to avoid the armpit thing, and Republic will find a way to attract women that doesn't involve a negligent discharge injury :)

It'll be an interesting gun to try to master. But while i don't think it'll be the easiest gun in the world to shoot I don't think it's going to be all that hard either. And it's better than what we're allowed to carry in the woods now as far as a very small firearm, which is nothing.

This poor thread....

You mean the barrel shroud? I'd personally spend the money on the heat seaking cooker bullets.

Congresswoman McCarthy's gonna get mad at you guys.

Nice guns I must admit. I personally don't see their potential though. A nice carbine or a smooth handling pistol would work much better for me.

Well, the whole point of the mares leg is, you can actually (in the Canadian law sense) have it at your side when you might actually need it. When you're in the mountains and there are grizzly and cougars around...it would be a lot better than begging them for mercy no?

Currently I am using a Mossberg 590 pump with a folding stock and hard cast round ball slugs as my carrying around gun. The sad fact of the matter is that it spends most of it's time in the quad box while I waste away the day walking around looking for shed antlers, scouting for game, checking game cams, setting up ground blinds/tree stands or worst of all,, walking around with my dog.

I bet I only actually have a gun with me less then 50% of the time. The rest of the time it could be a yard or a mile away from me back at the quad. I have got my self into enough pickles to know better but still.....it gets left behind.

The best solution is a handgun strapped to my hip at all times, can't leave it behind or set it down that way. Since that is not a possibility, this is the best option I have heard of yet.

Plus it makes you look cool.

It is nice to see so many people taking an interest in lever actions!
I was not going to post anything after getting such our time on the canadaammo site.
I was going to have a Marlin rebuilt with a 12 inch barrel.
When I get my mars leg I will put a full but stock on it.
When I was a kid I used to visit an old couple on their trap line.
The old lady shot a lever action 22 off her hip, I've seen her killer a coyote well over 75 yards.
All of us kids would try but never came close even at 25 yards.
With a full but stock the Mars leg would make an excellent lightweight Bush carbine.
Myself I ordered a 12 inch barrel for my 10/22 just to get the hang of handling a short barrel rifle.
Anybody considering using their little lever actions fore hunting should invest in a short barrel 22 and practice lots.
You will find that by holding your short barrel 22 rifle in front you rather than pushing it into your shoulder you will have exactly the same feel as a mars leg.
I can't wait to see all of you having so much fun LOL

Well.... recoil might be a TAD different... :)

It looks darker than before. I like it. Is it just a trick of the camera or did you stain the leather somehow?

Can you get it a little darker?

The belt is, indeed, darker. Just prior to taking the pics I gave the belt another, final, coat of carnuba wax which tends to look pretty dark till it completely dries. The dye that I used is called Lt. Brown, there is also a Dk. Brown and a Black so you can get real dark. There's also a Saddle Tan which would be the lightest; I'm kinda hopeing that someone orders a belt in this colour as I'm dieing to see what it looks like. In total there are 3 coats of neatsfoot oil, 2 coats of oil based dye, and 2 coats of carnuba wax.I figure this should stand up real well to weather. The only thing not stained or oiled is the pigsuede lining on the back; oiling that would negate the benefit of having it there as well as possibly transfer oil to the wearer.
Cheers!!
