UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

I plan to shoot two handed (although I will be trying one handed for fun), but for legitimate use when a 1200 pound grizzly is running at me... I think I will use two hands :p

Don't get too worried about that grizzly... I'd be more afraid of lightening in the hills around Calgary. The mare's leg would be better to have over your shoulder in that scenario than a 20" carbine I suppose, less of a lightening rod.

For fun, great, I'd get a kick out of it, but for work not getting this guy's fancy up...

well I really am not worried about it, for me it is honestly a fun novelty gun that I can legitimize its use to whomever complains about it by saying I will be using it for work. will I be using it for work, yes, will I ever need to use it for self defense? I certainly hope not. but the idea of (basically) a non-res pistol that one can use for trekking through the bush with for whatever purpose is almost unheard of in Canada ( I know a few secrets ;) ). That is what is the main attraction to this rifle for me.

you can put down my idea for use for it however you want, but it will be a useful rifle that could save my life someday. I simply cannot have a big long rifle catching on every goddamn branch that I push past, and with the quick nature of a bear charge, I need something that I can have on hand in a flash to try to scare the bear off or shoot it depending on the situation.

Regardless this rifle seems to be a hit with CGNs seeing as how this thread has over 400 posts and more than 15000 hits.

but everyone has their own opinion and are entitled to it.

oh by the way I am not worried about bears (or lightening for that matter haha even though there have been some close calls near Frank on a couple of occasions..) in or near the area of millarville (i dont live in calgary) I am worried about them in northern BC/Yukon where everyone is looking for that shiny yellow stuff :p and run into potentially dangerous wildlife often

Oh if you havent noticed... I ramble :)

Just try holding out a .30-30 at arm's length, see the angle your wrist is at, and contemplate aiming and shooting like that... Candown nailed it, that stock design was just never designed to be shot as a pistol.

Well thank goodness because if it WAS designed to be shot one handed it would be a pistol, and restricted :)

I have the carbine version - i'm quite aware that one handed shooting wouldn't be a practical option unless your target is 'the ground'. :) Same as trying to 'ine hand' a rifle. But with two handed shooting (which means i'ts NOT a pistol) then people seem accurate enough.

I dunno - we'll see. I'm sure it'll take a bit of practice but i bet I can get halfway decent with it.

There's the key- practice. With hand loading lead a fella can afford to practice lots and get reasonably accurate with it. I look forward to getting it in hand and seeing what the sights are like. While I typically prefer a ghost ring for irons, I'm not sure they would be of value with this rig.

If mine is an example - relatively mediocre. Very standard ladder sights.

I was thinking of replacing them with fibre optic 'ladder' sights that fit into that dovetail. Easier to adjust, better in low light.

But we'll see :)

Reading the guys lawsuit may have merit but there is likely something more to the story, Big companies usually try to avoid lawsuits with there products. It is unlikely that they will get an injunction to stop sales. If he wins his lawsuit then they may allow an injunction but it will take some time to go through the courts. My uncle and his friends developed a header reverser for combines, sold them for a few years and then ford new holland came out with the same design, they tried to sue and they ran out of money fast, and they had a patent, unless buddy can get money for his lawsuit he is sunk. How the system works.

Anyone ever tried shooting a mare's leg? They are literally near useless.........it's a nifty paper weight, the straight grip stock is not complimentary of hand held firing.

What if you hold it sideways, like a glock?

I couldn't resist. :p

You mean besides his head when he was a child?

That short buttstock, while very nice for carrying, does tend to cut down the accuracy potential of these items to about 10%, judging from comments on here and watching some YouTube videos.

Would fitting a normal length buttstock ruin the gun for all practical use?

I think a real buttstock would render an ultra slick little carbine that would actually be useful. I'm thinking of buying a mare's leg to restock. But unstocked, they're just toys, movie guns that like most things in the movies, don't do the same things in real life.

And that's why my little project will blow your mind  :)

I don't know about that. I think it's not a pistol, and you have to shoot it a little different (and forget one handing it unless you're target is 10 inches away). But there are those who claim accuracy using the push pull method. Hell - most people can't hit the broad side of a barn with a pistol first day shooting, but nobody would say pistols aren't accurate.

Not at all. As i said earlier i've got the 16 inch barrel now on a full stock version. Cutting four inches off that barrel wouldn't ruin the gun at all. BUT - you will get slightly slower speeds, and it'll be a little harder to point because the balance will shift back. So i'd kinda wonder why not go for the 16 inch version if you're going full stock anyway. But - it would work just fine. Obviously it would be easier to shoot than the mare's leg.

Does anyone have any idea how many pre-orders there are for the Mare's Leg? I sent Gary from Wanstalls an email on Friday and he said he would try to fill my request with the order he has coming sometime in March. Anyone have a rough count on how many there is?

thanks,

RE

10 percent is a little pessimistic....
