UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

I see that stock extension...is there any way someone could make that telescopic? IE twist the base plate to unlock, pull it out, twist it back vertical to lock it in? The butt on the RH is deep enough to drill out, I would think... That'd give you full RH functionality and rifle functionality...

Hmmm.... now THERE'S an interesting thought.... an extending 'AR-15' Styled stock.... I wonder if there is something that would match the style of the lever action.

I've been thinking of doing something along the lines of this:

A few people have asked me for these but I haven't really taken the time to do the proper R&D...need someone that can actually test it out in the bush. PM me with what you want to see in this specifically...caliber, styling, etc, and I'll put one together for someone to test out, no obligation.

Nice work. I'm wondering though if making it telescopic would change it's class?

I have sketched out a few ways to do this but I keep wondering about classification too...

It is under 26" from the factory so non res but if you modify the stock it is no longer from factory? maybe?

My thought is to make a collapsing stock that increases the overall length by 2" making it non res when collapsed by anyone's standard and giving the freedom to extend to maybe two additional lengths. I think it can be done.

Legality is the question... :HR:

the posted pic of the extension in this thread would be perfect. if it were "keyed" for lack of a better term, and the butt of the RH drilled out. the length of the extension sits inside the butt. turn 30 degrees to unlock, extend, rotate back into locked position.

it would look like a thicker butt plate when closed, and like the above extension when open.

that's what I had in mind anyway.
edit: the extension that Drill posted on pg 282. is the on I'm talking about.

you know,if you want a full size rifle than buy a full size one

Hey Shortround! (Appropriate name!) You do realize what this thread is all about, don't you? We are talking about a rifle with a 12" barrel! So even with a full stock it tops out at a hair over 29". Look at the picture in case you stumbled in here by mistake.

HISTORY LESSON: Barrel length NOT stock length dictates the type of rifle. A full size rifle is typically considered to be a rifle with a full length barrel. What is a full length barrel? Room for argument here but typically acknowledged to be an off the shelf battle or hunting rifle, barrel lengths of 26 - 30+" are common. When soldiers started riding horses and then sitting in vehicles it was decided that a rifle with a shorter barrel might be more convenient. This shorter barrelled rifle was called a carbine. Barrel lengths for these rifles WAS typically between 16 - 22". And then real short barrelled rifles started to come on the scene. Carbines with 12" and even shorter (sub-carbines), barrels are not uncommon, now. Any of these rifles can be equipped with full stocks, folding stocks, collapsible stocks, cut down stocks and in some cases no stocks.

But I think the real point here is what's it to you what I do with my rifle? I couldn't find a lever action bush rifle with a 12" barrel and a full length stock...so I built one! And boy am I happy with it! Modifying weapons (or vehicles, homes, furniture, landscapes, people, etc) happens to be human nature. And if you have any doubt about that maybe you need to reread this thread because right from the start people have taken this amazing little rifle and made it their own...just saying.

I love the full stock on my rh so much it has me thinking of getting a savage scout rifle 7.62x39/308 and get a gunsmith to put a 12 inch barrel on it

It certainly will but not terribly. 308 is comparitively insensitive to barrel length. I believe you lose about 50 ft/sec per inch of barrel you reduce. The trade off may be worth it depending on the rifle's intended application.

Gary recently informed us that these rifles have been classified as non-res

Until the RCMPs next hissy fit.

Let's not be naive enough to pretend anything's set in stone in the Canadian firearms classification portfolio. Horror stories abound.

I own a Ranch Hand in 44 Mag I use as an Black Bear protection pack sack/cottage gun so I have a horse in this race.

As good as it gets without an ATC in Canada and in Ontario getting an ATC and lottery wins have about the same statistical probability.

Fingers crossed.

Hope they stay NR.

Hi all. New to the forum. My Ranch Hand in .357 (only calibre I could find right now) is currently at a saddlemakers shop. Im awaiting a hip holster with gun belt and loops. So stoked.... Contemplating a full scabbard when its done. Pics to follow....

50 Yard Range Report
Out shooting today with my club and had a chance to shoot my full stocked Ranch Hand at 50 yds. I put a Limbsaver Precision Fit Recoil Pad on it due to a separated shoulder muscle and while it helped a lot I could still only shoot one 6 round group. I had a couple of young fellows fire groups but they had never fired a 44 magnum before so their groups weren't stellar but still respectable. My group is the high one -2 3/4". Sitting on my butt, using my knees as a rest, not rapid fire but shooting quick.

The 3rd group was low and to the left of the paper. One fellow shot from the knees like I did and he had a 4 1/2" group. The other fellow shoot offhand standing and his group was about 12".

I'm running Steve's fiber optic front sight and peep rear site.

i have one in 44 mag. mounting a light combo laser and a shoulder sling and a velcro leg strap and a gold pan no looking around any more.

Anybody have issues with the 44mag bullets sliding back under the loading gate and blocking it off? I can load as many as I want if I use the next bullet to push the round in, but last one in be it first or third always blocks the gate

Mine does that occasionally. I have found that if you work the lever just slightly, maybe 1/2", it pushes that round where it needs to be so I can keep loading.

I'm not sure if the gun should behave this way but this is how I deal with it.
