Update. The .30-06 is good enough as a short range deer rifle.

Thomas Pigeon from Canada in the Rough? .30-06 for short range deer? Is he getting paid by someone to talk nonsense like that? Maybe he gets royalties for every .300 WSM convert!:D

My guess is Sako is paying him very well to promote them. I turn the TV off when Thomas Chickadee comes on.

Umm.... I think the .308 win was brought along to replace the 30.06 by the U.S military some 50 odd years later so yeah they were both chosen by the Military, it just so happens that they are still using .308/7.62x51 Nato ;)

I think I know what you mean, the '03 springfield actions were cheap and available so a lot of hunters were out there hunting with 30.06 and the same thing happened here with the .303 brit and the Enfields.

I just wish we could of chambered our wartime rifles in .280 Ross, imagine all those .280 Ross Enfields/Ross Rifles and 280 Ross ammo on the shelf at Crappy Tire. There is something to said for a 145 gr. Bullet travelling at 3000 fps......

Yes your right Pathfinder and those .280 Ross with today powders and primers you would chronographing those 145 at 3200 ++fps I have never checked case cappacity of .280 ross but its big

Thomas Pigion says so! :p

If you want a rifle for longer shots or other game, you must now shoot a .300 WSM. I wonder if the elk have heard this yet? But once the word starts getting around, .30-06 bullets will start bouncing off of them like rubber balls...

But whatever you do, don't question Thomas Pigion.

If he thinks that about deer, I shudder to think what he would recommend for a grizzly, water buffalo or elephant.
They'd have to have wheels on them and a crew.

And more game wounded and lost with the 30-06 for the same reason, there are more 30-06s being used. The biggest reason for that being that they were the military issue cartridge for the U.S.A. ,and the result was a great supply of low priced surplus rifles.

Ive seen many moose and elk go down hard from a 30-06. Until a quarter century ago most elk and moose were dropped by 30-06 and .308. I knew a guy who got a moose and an elk every year with a .270. Using a heavier bullet (180 grain) for moose and elk and 160 for deer was common with a 30-06. A 30-06 had one of the best combinations of hitting power with a good trajectory of the common guns available and everyone seemed to get their animals. Animals would go down that didnt seem hit in either the heart or lungs. There also seemed to be less lost animals. A 30-30 has a much different trajectory. Moose or elk are usually taken within 100-300 yards. My granpa used a .303 British and it worked fine. I have an acquaintance who was arrested lat year for failure to retrieve and animal after wounding a moose using a big caliber. He needs to spend more time on the range. I dont know of anyone is Saskatchewan that ever used a USA army surplus 30-06. It was an upgrade over the .303, 30-30 etc and the main gun manufacturers put them out for sale eg the Remington 30-06 Bushmaster pump was a favorite.

I'm sure that Thomas has at least some spelling skills. Which made him at least several times wealthier than you and has hunted in every part of Canada. Right or wrong in his caliber choices or opinions, he does have you beat several times over in lifestyle choices as well....no? He lives in a beautiful log house and you live in the f**king "hood" of Lethbridge, Alberta?....:D who's the loooooooooser ????
What is a looser? Your second sentence is not grammatically correct. Lethbridge has a hood? Lifestyle choices? Are you referring to ### hunters? Is someone who is a slick bullslinger waste of skin necessarily better because they are wealthy? I dont know the TV fellow but your reasoning seems erratic.

Next time CGN has a spelling bee or grammar contest, you can be the captain then....Come to think of it, maybe not, after all you picked up a Tikki T3 and ordered a 700 sonero ---whatever that is. Check your own backyard first :welcome:

All this talk of the birdman has reminded me of a situation a good buddy of mine went through a year and a bit back. He had talked to Tom on a few occasions about a coyote hunt for the program in our neck of the woods. All the details were ironed out and we had admittedly gotten a bit excited about the chance to hunt coyotes on TV. A couple months out, Thomas and his crew wanted to know what hotel suite they would be put up in, and how many meals we were going to provide. That was when he was asked nicely to pound sand and it never happened. Greedy ####er cant take a gift hunt without the perks.

If you cant kill it with a 30-06 you should practise with it before you hunt with it. If it didnt die then you missed. Pretty straight forward eh?

I agree, a 30-06 is not good as a short range deer rifle.

I'ts only good as a short, medium and long range deer rifle.

The 30-06 is one of those cartridges that has had it's day. Does it work? yes, of course. But it's redundant now, and it should be discontinued.

x2.........It's just too damn old
