UPS playing games now with gun/ammo shipments

Hum, prohibited of some firearms and then severely restrict the movement of every other firearm and ammo across the country. Coincidence or is my tinfoil hat on too tight?

The guys saying industry Needs it’s own shipping are right IMO. Big task to start up and run though. If enough gun owners were willing to set up franchised stations, it could see pretty good shipping coverage.

Canada is a huge nation with a small population. The distances between our major cites exceeds the width of many whole nations. The outline of just British Columbia around the UK and a good chunk of France/Belgium gives people some idea how vast our nation really is. Setting up a coast to coast to coast delivery service would be a formable task to say the least.

received delivery of my first restricted yesterday delivered by UPS. The shipping label str8 up says "adult signature required". The driver knocked on the door, dropped it off, and left.

Luckily I had a Nest CAM monitoring the entire time long enough for me to get the package. Like wtf UPS.

It's not so much that it'd be formidible, it's more that your bill for anything shipped using it would be $500 lol. Vast county, small populace, low product volume, dangerous good (aka high insurance), lots of govt paperwork = one hell of a freight bill.

Additionally, any service like this would most likely only be servicing urban areas - lower mainland, Windsor to Montreal, Edmonton - Red Deer. Anyone else would most likely be SOL. I just don't see potential product volume allowing for anything else.

Cool map btw. It's crazy that the Haida Gwaii are approx the same size as Northern Ireland.

Maybe UPS has realized they are now the only gig in town.
Make these separate accounts so they know it's a firearm related item and up go the prices.
With no competition there is no pricing to compete with.

that right there is exactly why courier companies are dropping firearms and ammo, not some grand conspiracy.. too many incidences like that make the news and look bad, not to mention the liability.

They are the only ones who ship ammo so this is not a huge threat. Also the firearm community is small so would likely not heavily impact their business.

We ship dangerous goods via Purolator. How much longer that is an option remains to be seen.

I don't think there's a big conspiracy here.

I think what's happened is a combination of factors:

1) Shipping guns and ammo has liabilities that other products don't. If Canada Post leaves a $1500 iPad on your front step that was signature required and it gets stolen, their liability is the replacement cost of the item. If UPS leaves 1000rds of 9mm on your front step or a gun and it gets stolen, then they have a massive problem.

2) Whether it makes sense or not, shipping companies eliminated or severely curtailed signature verification due to COVID-19. Everything gets left on the front step, lobby, etc.

3) Guns and ammo are a small portion of their business but are essentially in a class of their own as controlled goods that come with extra liabilities. With the pandemic, if the choice is to basically put guns and ammo in their own category requiring signatures or stopping the shipment of guns and ammo, the loss is small enough to make the latter decision.

4) Companies may just decide that it's not worth their effort to do it anymore, especially if their company is garbage and mistakes have consequences. Canpar is Exhibit A here.
