US M14 Parts Kits

I guess this is as good a place to ask as any. Can anyone lend some insight into the pro's, con's and differences associated between a light or heavy barrel? Aside from size/weight of course.

Also Wolverine; I know you guys are busy right now as well as understaffed due to SHOT, just wanted to say I fired you off an email last night. Thanks for doing this folks.

Will a parts kit generally come from the same manufacturer or will they be Frankenstein parts kit (all parts from different manufacturers) ?

I was going to ask the same question, but I think it would be extremely time consuming to verify this manually for that many parts kits, especially when they're short handed. That stated, I would certainly prefer waiting a few more days until they've been able to verify that a sample of the parts kits are homogeneous in manufacturer, and sort them by manufacturer.

It would be great to know which manufacturers are represented, and be able to request a specific maker of a complete parts kit. A complete TRW parts kit could fetch quite a premium, though I would personally be very happy with a complete Springfield Armory kit without a premium attached.

I would think that they are just going to be complete from one rifle (less the receiver) as it is military it would we a mix of parts, like the Nam 1911's that came into the country many years ago. Tactical Teacher had suggested at his course to purchase a couple of parts kits and then you can mix and match.

From what I have seen they are a typical mixture of manufactures. To sort all the parts 20 of each by manufacture and then re-bag them would be a large undertaking. How much extra would people be willing to pay? What guarantee would they sell after we have sorted them. I am not convinced that this is the way to go.

Nor I. Not to mention I guarantee that there would be odd numbers between manufacturers. You would be left with more than a few incomplete kits. Also unless it's trw I doubt people would mind much for matching anyhow.
I'm perfectly happy as long as they are not mixed between rifles. These are military grade M14 snipers, for 950 bucks...What more could a guy ask for??

What do you mean by: I'm perfectly happy as long as they are not mixed between rifles.

Oh just that I would prefer not to mix parts from two different rifles, as you've received them. (Unless some parts are no good of course) But again, beggars can't be choosers. At the end of the day I'm just overjoyed to have a (basically) complete m14 designated marksmans rifle for 950 bucks.
Cannot thank you enough for bringing these in.

This has been asked already I'm sure but what does an amateur have to do to make a functioning rifle from this? I read over the forum and seen that the consensus is to put a Norinco receiver in it but what is involved in that process? Will I need to get a gunsmith to use the Norinco receiver and assemble the rifle or can it be done at home with no specialized tools? Are they're any other readily available options besides a Norinco m305 chopped up just for the receiver? Any other CGN'ers out there getting this and worried about getting in over their head? Always wanted this rifle and I don't want to miss out if these are super rare but I'm not confident in my gunsmithing to be able to get this done.

Bare minimum you'll need a barrel vice, receiver wrench, and head space gauges. Among a few other small tools like like punches, levels, etc.

You will need a gunsmith or someone who has experience installing these barrels. People do it from home but it is probably better to spend the $100 and have someone like Tac-Ord or Vulcan gun refinishing install the barrel. You could need some lapping on the bolt and op rod as well. Fairly easy task for a gunsmith. Installing the op-rod guide isn't that difficult.

In terms of receivers you have these choices. Norinco is the most readily available.

Norinco < JRA/Rockola/Bula < LRB

thanx for the heads up Mr Wolverine !!

gotta say, I'm impressed with the very reasonable pricetag!!!!

Doesn't a norinco receiver have metric threads for the barrel and the US version standard thread? Just wondering if this.barrel would thread into a norinco receiver or would you have to do some re threading to make it work

Norinco receivers are cut to USGI spec from forgings. roll pin for bolt catch and connector pin is different but as far as most everything else, such as receiver threads, ALL M14/M1A/M305 ect use the same threads except for the actual components on the barrel (gas lock and castlenut)

now....
I gots a question?

by heavy barrel..... these are USGI probably made by TRW or SAK? So they are more like the medium profile we are used to from say criterion and krieger profile/contour wise?
Had a few people messaging me asking questions and advice regarding the standard or heavy usgi barrels and if the oprod guide needs to be like the krieger heavy barrel.

my answer was the oprod guides on these kits should be the same as i thought the usgi "heavy barrel" was in the medium profile and all parts are same between the two.
someone can correct me if I wrong though as I have no knowledge on these kits..... just happy to see them!!!
