So after months of waiting the LGS calls and says I have a package to pick up. I had almost forgotten about the UTAS UTS-15 I put on pre-order with them many months ago. I check it out, looks solid so I take her home. A shooting buddy wanted to come over and check out another rifle, so we get looking at the UTAS and decide to give it a function test.

So I grab some Winchester 2 3/4" slugs, a box of 15 seems right because the gun holds 15.
I could only get 6 rounds in each magazine and that includes the one you leave behind the loading door, so it only holds 12 +1 of these shells.
So I load the first round in and rack it out, good strong ejection.
2nd and 3rd and 4th......on the fifth round, the bolt unlocked and went rearward about 1/2" and locked up solid, I gave the slide another try, nothing! Several more tries and now I am debating if I have to take this gun back to the LGS with a round in the chamber. So maybe gravity can help, held vertically and on one knee, buttstock into deck while racking, 5 times and hard to get the round free of the chamber.
Give it another try cycling some ammo, now it will not eject, the round just sits there. So I clear all the ammo out, then load only 2 rounds into the left magazine, it will now eject but the second round jams up solid in the chamber like before?

I gave the gun a third chance and was further rewarded with stuck rounds, rounds not ejecting.............Noticed the cycled rounds that the plastic hulls are all beat up, some with long lines of scaring.......

I rounded up my trusty Mossberg from like 26 years ago, its a 500A that has never been cleaned, loaded up the same rounds, and cycled them all through the gun smooth as butter! Same for my Rem 870 Tactical, and my Benelli Supernova.....Not one issue.

I'm not saying the UTAS can't be a good gun, just that I seem to have gotten a lemon and it seems from reviews to have several issues that need to be addressed prior to calling it a "Tactical Shotgun".

I will be returning this shotgun to the store where I bought it and will be looking for something else. Too bad because I really liked the look of this shotgun. Very disappointed in UTAS.

the winchester 2 3/4" slug shells are actually a bit longer than a true 2 3/4" shell. They don't all fit into the magazine tubes. Try some different ammo. I've also heard it's not a fan of certain 3" shells either.

also did you take it apart first and giver her a cleaning/lubing?

I have one on order. Testing my luck I suppose.

If the video reviews are around a year ago, it's likely it was the first revision of the shotgun, and US made. The newer ones are a lot better and Turkish made I believe.

I think most people just google it and find the nutnfancy review and go ERMAHGERD ITS SUCKS.

I have heard that about winchester shells but my other shotguns go to full capacity with them, so I am not seeing what the problem could be other than its picky with ammo.

I did not take it apart to clean it or lube it, but something is seriously wrong with this gun, its cutting the shells as they cycle through, so that cant be good. If a gun can't cycle ammo, then I won't pull the trigger giving it a test.

I've seen enough bad vids and forum reviews on the UTAS to steer well away from it.

Funny thing, for evey bad review, there seems to be a good one like Hickoc45, had no trouble at all. I pre ordered it like last November...then heard all the trouble with the US made ones. Mine came through the local gun shop but the distributer was Wolverine!

When I took it back to the LGS this morning, everyone said, oh,.... we seen a memo that certian guns could have this problem, still has to go back to the distributor but now I am leery about this gun. Seems awful finicky to me so I think I will buy a Benelli M4 instead!

I did like the idea about the 15 round capacity which you can't get with any other shotgun it seems.

Here's the part where the winchester slugs won't all fit in.

I was interested in this model, because I saw the KSG was getting lousy reviews. I wanted a new toy, as my Benelli M-4 is the Alpha Male of the collection. My Mosquito, ok, it's a .22 pistol, and it's fussy on ammo. I don't want my shotgun to be fussy and finicky the way an AR-15 platform is. I want a combat shotgun that can take whatever you grab to put in it - slugs, different brands, dining room cutlery, dirty ammo, and fire it fine. My Winchester Defender fires anything, just like the 500's & 870's.

Now, not so interested in a combat tactical shotgun like this.

did we miss the part where you got home stripped the gun cleaned it of all the packing grease and oils, re lubed it, then took it out and then shot it??

No no no, you missed the part where OP doesn't believe in doing that. It's all the firearm's fault!

I know the UTAS is very picky with ammo. Don't put cheap shells through it. when the guys at milarm tested it they had the same issue with cheap ammo not ejecting properly, switched to better grade "bulk" and boom, worked flawlessly.

The KSG has issues with insertion not extraction.... and it doesn't matter what type of ammo you use with them it still jams. if you don't do a full rearward #### before cycling forward it jams, no ifs or butts. with a lot of shotguns going far enough back to allow the round to popup in the feed bath is good enough to chamber the round but not with the KSG.

I think you guys missed the part where the LGS had a memo about this very problem with the gun! Its not due to packing grease or lube, its due to defective parts. And yes, I do believe in functioning checking a firearm prior to shooting it, that's one of the reasons I still have all my fingers and have not lost a hand! If it can't pass a function check, then I sure would not shoot it especially after the problems I was experiencing!

I thought it prudent to let fellow CGN'ers know of my problem. I did not have to take the time to post this issue and I have been refunded in full from my LGS after they apologized to me for the trouble and not being forthcoming about the problem. This firearm is on the way back to the distributor for repair. That is beyond the scope of a field striping and cleaning grease and oil to account for the bolt jamming on the fifth round and failing to eject!

Forgot to ask, did yours have the polymer magazine selector? Or was the mag tube switch metal?

Polymer ones are the older-ish ones that have a bolt that's a bit too short/another part that needs to be upgraded. After that it should be flawless.

I had my UTS over a year ago, one of the very first ones around. Mag selector switch was metal from the beginning.

I sold it shortly after buying a kSG... Which by the way works flawlessly with what ever ammo I stuff in it.

Plastic feed ramp? Rusting springs?

I saw the nutnfancy video and good lord. A plastic, rusting, malfunctioning, uncomfortable, and ugly beast of a shotgun.

Do not buy guns based on Hickok45 videos. His videos are not reviews, they are hype sessions. Which are fine. I LOVE hickok45 vids.
