Take something old, add something old to it, make something new...

Even after the initial successes in halting the advances on Kiev and Kharkiv in the early days, I figured the Russians would go "Full Russian" and just line up a wall of artillery, and start carpet shelling and play a game of inches, and I didn't want to bet on Ukraine's long term chances of success. Especially seeing as they were reliant on a doddering, nutless, senile old twit in the White House keeping his nerve and the supplies flowing.

But... They just keep adapting and improvising. It's turning out to be a country populated by Natural Born Marines. I'm disinclined to bet on the outcome, but it would be foolish to bet against Ukraine. At the rate their going, they can pull it off, if the stars align. It would be one of the greatest military upsets in history. The heart they've put into it, they deserve the win.

OVERSEAS WAR - ANGOLA: VIRIATO OPERATION - NANBUANGONGO
The border of the Kingdom of Nambuangongo
The UPA had installed itself in the so-called "Kingdom of Nambuangongo", whose southern border was defined by the Lifune River, after the bridge over the same river in Anapasso was destroyed. The appearance in the international media of the news of the existence of the Kingdom of Nambuangongo, caused great disturbance in Luanda and Lisbon at the highest level of political power. As a result, the Chief Command ordered the immediate occupation of Nambuangongo and the strategists began to outline tactics and operational maneuvers, in order to achieve the desideratum of political power. A plan for the occupation of Nambuangongo was thus established (Operation Viriato), which would be achieved as follows: Three autonomous forces would advance on Nambuangongo by Three itineraries converging in that village: The first, (BC 114), based in the region of Caxito/ Mabubas, would advance through Anapasso, Quicabo, Balacende, Quissacala, Beira Baixa, Bela Vista, Onzo, Nambuangongo; the second, (BC 96), based in Úcua and around the famous Pedra Verde, would advance through Pedra Boa, Quibaxe, Quitexe, Mucondo, Muchaluando, Onzo, Nanbuangongo; the third, (CC 158+), based in the Ambriz region, would advance eastward through Zala, Onzo, Nambuangongo.

On the 4th of July 1961, the 3rd Platoon of CC 115, stationed in Caxito, received the mission to explore/open the route up the Lifune River, guaranteeing security to Lieutenant Varela, Commanding Engineer of the Companhia de Sapadores, who, in Anapasso , would assess the condition and damage suffered by the existing bridge, drawing up the project for its recovery, as it was an essential work for crossing the Lifune River and progressing north towards Quicabo-Nambuangongo. The Lifune River was even considered by the "terrorists", as the UPA independence fighters were then called, the southern border of the "Kingdom of Nambuangongo".

After a journey of 15 to 20 km along an unexplored path, full of abatises, small due to the fact that the forest in that area is savanna-like, arriving at Anapasso, the sought-after bridge was found with the central section of the fallen deck, cutting completely the possibility of passing vehicles between the banks of the river.

At the entrance of the bridge, on the left bank, according to sources at the time, a large wooden sign was placed, saying the following: Kingdom of Nambuangongo - From now on, there is no white foot - Everything that passes dies. While the Lieutenant Engineer was studying the bridge and was guaranteed security, a part of the force explored the surroundings, namely the Maria Amélia Farm, in Anapasso, located next to the Bridge, which essentially consisted of an immense orange orchard along the along the Lifune River, on the left bank.
