I've looked at this from a few different angles from the videos posted online by people in attendance. It looks to my unskilled eye like the planes came into each other in pattern turns that had both planes in each other's blind spot. The air-boss flew them into each other.

The B-17 was the "Texas Raiders" - 50 years of touring as a demonstration/working museum aircraft:

The other was a P-63, not sure which one of the 2 the Commemorative air force runs...

This is a tremendous loss. 5 people on board the B-17 at the time, just the pilot in the Airocobra. No survivors.

To my unskilled eye... looks like the B17 was in the cobra's blind spot forward and below while he was in a left banked turn.
Also he might have been looking elsewhere.

Feuertaufe 90 mins.
1940 German propaganda movie of the Luftwaffe

The Legend of the Luftwaffe began in Poland, the first victim of Hitler's blitzkrieg. Combat cameramen filmed the aerial campaign, showing preparations for flight, massive air strikes, and the appalling devastation wreaked upon Polish towns and armies. Highlighted by a lengthy, riveting sequence depicting the siege of Warsaw, Feuertaufe inspired Germany with pride and confidence and foreign viewers with dread. Norbert Schultze's original score lyrically enhances this propaganda masterpiece.

Started with a bang but did not end well for Germany.

The last of the MACV SOG crowd are starting to release their mementos before they fade away. Photos, home movies, flight radio recordings...

They did what was asked of them, and then some.

First transatlantic flight was made on July 21 1938 from Foynes, on the west coast of Ireland, to Boucherville, Montreal, Canada, a flight of 4,715 km.
