VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

anyone know where I can get the higher cheek rests for the ctr in Kanada ?

I'm gonna make a Romanian type foregrip very soon.
Member Deckard always was an amazing person.
I can’t be more happy than now that he gives up (temporarily?) troll hunting
and other useless monkey shyte and he decides to bring – AGAIN!!! -
his huge contribution to the progress of the human civilization
and the well being of planet Earth.
I’m so proud of member Deckard! :)

Now the Romanian pistol grip is going to be an interesting project
and I can’t wait for the results.

Me, personally, I’m from the old school
and I don’t mind a regular forend, meaning no pistol grip at all.
But from all the pistol grips I tried on that kind of guns,
IMO the Romanian one is the most ergonomic for any size of hands,
either bare-hand or gloved.
The angles and curvatures and dimensions are simply perfect.

Just in case you don't have a Romanian handy,
I have 2 pics that I hope will help you with your project.

Please remember, all the geometrics of this (meaning the position of the
pistol grip on the forend, the dimensions and curvature) are important
for both ergonomics and for clearing the mag
(allowing plenty of space for tilting).

Here’s some more pics of romanians I’ve stollen from the net some time ago.

The export-only sidefolding stock 5.45x39

I have done some measurements. The only thing is that the grip has to be very forward so that the mag can be taken out. So imagine that grip pushed forward. I need more dimensions, more than thickness. Thanks.

OK,
Tryin' ta' push it over the 2900 mark by midnight...

Has anyone tried the UTG#478 mount (as sold here by Marstar...) on their VZ...? If so...comments...?
Not to sure on the VZ compatability...don't trust that "and variants" routine..

No way that will fit. That is for an AK.

Yah...kinda what I thought, though other sites have it coming with 'spacers for other models'...Can't confirm it on the Leapers site, as it seems to be down at the moment (or have they folded w/ the too low US $...?)

Anybody out there got a CAD/Drwg program that can overlay the Dr. L's inch grid for a pattern, and post the result../
'Else it's 'back to school' for me and software...and s**t, we just don't get along..

chrome barrels hurt accuracy

regarding previous post-

I have heard that chrome is one of the metals that expands and contracts more with heat and cold than regular barrel steel, therefore chrome bores have larger diameters than regular steel bores to compensate,so the bore doesnt become undersize when hot and get worn as the bullet leaves.

possible ?

Because this photo is not totally vertical there is some distortion. If you could take one vertical with a 2 foot carpenter's square next to it the grid would be more accurate. Sorta like CSI.

This isn't the first time I've tried. I made a lower handguard from an enlargened photocopy. I found the problem being the close proximity of the grip and the magazine. I had to unlock the magazine and pull it straight down, not rock and drop.

My second try moved it forward somewhat, and there was still a problem, so it cut it smaller and shaped it into this...

It is highly ergonomic, but weird looking. I will try now to make a classic Romanian grip, but more forward. If I can.

Methinks .310/.311/.312 dia will stay that way regardless of the material used until there is wear on the barrel.

IMHO chrome is still a good option. :D

I have a chrome bore colt car 15 that still shoots half inch at a 100yds, after many years, yet my non chrome CZ 858 shoots quarter inch at 100yds, and I have yet to get a chrome bore CZ58 to go under 2 inches.I shoot cold barrel groups - It would be interesting to try hot barrel groups and see what happens- maybe chrome gets more accurate when hot ! LOL
