VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

I like the VZ, It's a fun shoot. I think I'll get one. I was considering getting one today, but I was sidetracked by the Taurus tracker I saw and then I didn't know what I wanted more.

Only thing is. They come just packed right up in preserving oil. So the first while you're shooting it. It sprays this gunk in your eyes and on your face. Yes, even after being cleaned. I dunno why. It could also be the fact that the gas is being ejected on both sides... but it's a mitigating factor in my enjoyment of it. But not by much.

You can't see it. But it feels disgusting, and the condensation eventually bungs up the visibility on your specs/safety glasses and you have to wipe them clean with some kind of agent. Otherwise it smudges.

I could use a few analogies equating the use of the gun to relating to a woman with loose morals. But that'd be tacky. All I'll say is afterwards you just feel kind of gross, although it seemed fun at the time.

Still. This is one for the collection. The price is too good to pass up.

Apparently it was but, probably not stripped down and given a real thorough job.

I have noticed though, from the last two outings with the rifle. It has gotten significantly better for it. So I'm kind of leaning towards the whole preserving oil residue being a factor.

The economics of this rifle is again, a huge plus. You can buy a nice big box of 1700 rounds for 250 or so? Granted the cheap quality supposedly has a tendency to corrode the 858's barrel. So, maintenance is necessary.

Still. That's bloody cheap! You could easily plink with a gun like that without breaking the bank.

No excuse for that as I can field strip my 858-2 and reassemble in less than a minute without rushing.

The beauty of the rifle is its simplicity.

Well here are some prototypes I made. The replacement handguard I call Vzor 2 (given it is second try), and the folding stock cheek piece is Vzor 1St. It provides nice cheek weld on the folder.

The lower "Teardrop" grip is in its more forward position because the magazine won't rock properly otherwise. I found that out on Vz.1. While the design looks odd, it is actually very ergonomic. The Vz.2 design is much stronger than the Vz.1.

My next attempt will be a Vz.3 foregrip with underrail which will mount standard K type grip. The Vz.2 design is strong enough to mount side rails as well. The long M16A2 type pistol grip is half done.

Deckard --I will have some photo's for you here in a bit.

BTW - the KCP (Kabul City Police) are armed with CZ-58's... The Czech's are getting rid of them and they donated tons to the Afghan National Police and KCP.

Plus many on the Black Market.

Everyone here prefers them to Ak's...

We can actually own and use them.
I LOVE mine.

Dude -- our CZ-58's have happy switches and we dont have mag law issues...

Well the CZ is smaller - more accurate and on auto it is pretty controlable even with the cyclic about x2 an Ak.

I shot and passed a rifle/carbine course of fire with a CZ-58 :D (edit: who's COF)

None of the Ak's here can shoot for #### -- most are shot out pieces of #### -- anything you buy typically will have bullets that tumble about 10M...
Some of these are old AK-47's and some more "recent" AKM's -- but they ALL suck -- most wont feed if they group.

Now you see why the ANP/KCP etc have replaced their AK's...

its not as egronomic, or accurate as an M4 -- but you can find 7.62x39 on any wide spot of the road...

You can actually put 31 rds in the 30 rds mags too -- but they are then a ##### to chamber.
