VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Hi guys

I've been doing lots of reading on the rifle and am probably going to pick one up soon.

I'm just not sure whether I want to get the 858-2 or the restricted version.

AFAIK the only differences between the two are the barrel length and the chrome lining.

Am I correct?

I have my PAL for restricted and non restricted. However, I don't currently own any restricted firearms. Is there any benefit to me as a law abiding citizen to stick with non-restricted firearms?

To me it just seems like a better call to get the non-restricted version as I can take it to any range, or hunt with it. Are there any other drawbakcs I haven't thought about?

Thx

Ahhh

And to my next question. Is there a difference between the Marstar and Wolverine versions of the 858 restricted?

For some reason I can't help but thinking that if you get a restricted firearm they put you on a privacy invasion list or something... lol

The other thing I was thinking was that they keep of track of every gun registered whether its restricted or not - right? ie I read somewhere that X number of 858's had been registered this year. So I guess getting they could still put you on a stink list even if you get the non-restricted version

And finally, to you guys with the 858-2. Have you had any problems with the corrosive ammo yet? Is it really that much work to clean the gun after each use?

Thx for all the great advice guys

There are small mechanical differences between the two versions but they're functionally identical.

There's only one extra step for cleaning after corrosively primed ammo. Run a kettle of boiling water through the barrel and gas system first, then clean as per normal. The key is to dissolve the salts left behind from the primers and flush them away. I've used boiling water or windex to do this.

I was asked for an update on wooden 58 furniture. There is a company called ironwooddesigns dot com that makes amazing things. I know they are in the works now that 58s have been 'discovered' stateside. I have spoken to the owner for years and he is Canadian friendly. As a side, look at his wooden stocks for ARs and 10/22s (the latter being a no-go I wish type).

ironwooddesigns drool!!! I'm sure they would have a pretty big clientele up here.

I sent an email to them a while ago and never heard back. Update: Just received a reply. They're working on a CZ set but it's not done yet.

Not sure, it's not mine but you can find out by measuring yours to the end of the gas tube, then measure the bayonet lug/front sight and add them together.
