VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Yep get an AK/SKS sight adjustment tool. Or use a large ounch and happer. Crude...not recomended....but it will work.

well the real FA cz58 they would not worry they just flick selector to FA and spray!

use a brass punch and small hammer the sks tool works BUT you mave have to hammer as the sight may be stuck from time princess auto has brass punch sets on sale from time to time

Russian field ready sight adjustment tool. Very robust. Also available in camo.

I had an sks that shot fine, shot better with the open sights than when I mounted a scope on it.To say anything from the cz is crap is absurd.I own a cz-550 in 375 H&H and it is a hell of a rifle that I will never sell.I sold the sks to the first guy who had the cash because I did not have a use for it.The trigger was terrible, but even with the trigger I shot some very nice groups at 50 yards,100 yards was so so and this was with the crappy norinco ammo. The sks did function well hardly ever jamming.

I took my Russian SKS and my CZ 858 to the range yesterday and must say accuracy wise they are no different. Both will shoot 3"-4" at 100 yards off a crappy rest, open sights, with norinco silver box.

I figure that these two rifles aren't really in the same class as one is a "battle rifle carbine" that shoots a short round round while the other is an "assault rifle".

I know some people cringe when the word assault rifle is used but I don't know of an acceptable replacement word that describes a select fire, high capacity removeable magazine, low power rifle round. I guess you can call the Cz858 a neutered assault rifle since it's not select fire and has a pinned magazine.

I think if you want a rifle that is more effective in say a 3 gun shoot then the Cz is the way to go. You have more options loading wise (magazines or stripper clips) plus it comes right out of the box with a pistol grip and a folding stock (if desired). It's also over a pound lighter and is shorter than an SKS and that can make all the difference to some people. You could of course get yourself an SKS-D and add a bunch of goodies with the money you saved like pistol grip stocks with a proper bedding job, trigger job, and nice aperture sights. You'd end up with something very similar to a Cz 858 minus a bolt hold open, plus an extra two pounds and 4" of extra length.

If you're the type of person who wants something to shoot beer cans with or take to the range as a cheap shooting fun gun that's more manly than a 22 rimfire then the classic SKS is the way to go since it's cheaper (even a nice Yugo or even a Russian) and it will do just about everything a Cz 858 will do on the range or in camp. A norinco will also be fine, you might have to go through one or two to get a good one then put some elbow grease into bedding and trigger jobs to get it to shoot straight.

There's also the look cool factor, if you just plain don't like the look of a gun, or if it feels uncomfortable, then you won't shoot it! You'll always find an excuse not to bring it along to the range. It's better to spend more money on something you will shoot, then save some cash and then leave it in your safe.

I havn't played around with the VZ much, but i can say this. both rifles are a short to mid range rifle at best and with open sights i can hit pretty much every gopher i shoot at at 50 yards with my sks. Thats all the accuracy anyone can ask out of any rifle in that genre, so the fact that the VZ gets an inch tighter grouping at whatever range is fairly irrelivant to me. I've owned and fired SKS's of the Norinco, yugo, and Korean models and never once have i had any serious problems. my yugo and my norinco that i currently own have had hundreds of rounds put through them and I have literaly never had one single jamm or misfire that wasn't directly the cheap ammos fault. paying 600 bones for a VZ just because it looks more like an AK is reduculous, so the triggers a little nicer, big deal, re-work the trigger on your sks... heres the link http://www.surplusrifle.com/reviews/...ring/index.asp
the SKS is the best rifle ever made, and I'm pretty sure is worshipped as a god in some countries ;)

The thing with the VZ is that its more of an interferance fit than transition fit when it comes to the front sight windage. This is mainly because one should only have to sight in their rifle once, and the tight fit will hold it in place even in the most demanding combat situations.

You could buy a 2 inch clamp for 1 dollar at rossy or 3 dollars from canadian tire remove the swivel end by cranking it all the way out. Then use this for windage adjustment. You may need to put a large bolt on the end to give space for the thing to pass through.

It is a little cheaper than the real deal.

Well people have to keep in mind that the 600 bones is for a package deal, and not just the rifle only.
The VZ rifle with a mag, which is all you need to get started, is worth 375$.
That is what Milarm was selling them for in late october.
And that is what I paid for mine.
Now the only comparable SKS to the VZ is the D model.
The D models sell for about 300$ in very good condition with a mag.
The VZ has a better mag and already comes with a pistol grip.
The SKS-D needs a new stock for that setup, costing about 80$.
The AK mags have a reputation for the occasional jambing or binding of ammo within. Not to mention that AK mags cost more than VZ mags which can be had for 25-35$. AK mags are about 60-75$.
The VZ has a bolt hold open feature and a stripper clip guide. The SKS-D does not.
Some say that the stripper clip guide is useless, but we live in a country where you can only have a 5 round capacity. Using stripper clips is more often than not quicker to load than changing a mag.
An inch better grouping is quite handy in competitions, but not obligatory for plinking and combat.
Need I say more?
I'm not defending the VZ, I'm simply trying to show an honnest and fair comparision.

They are not selling them for 375$ anymore.
But we are comparing rifles to rifles, not a rifle package to a rifle.
The VZ is worth 375$ as a stand alone rifle, and the SKS-D is beeing sold for around the 275-300$ mark without additional accesories.
That is my point.

CZ858 Has anyone tried mounting an AK side rail?

Just wondering if anyone has tried mounting optics on their cz or VZ yet with the Russian AK side rail.
