VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Somebody mentioned that they found the Kobra sight alittle on the heavy side compared to other similar products. Sorry, can't recall from who or where I read that.

Take the buttplate off, use long screw driver take out screw, off it comes. Assemble :attach folding stock use short screw and tighten.

Flobalob - a CZ owner, and pretty knowledgeable guy, found a czech website with a mount for a VZ58 - and it was exactly the same mount as an AK mount he'd seen on an American website. I've also been doing some web browsing on various diff't AK, SVD, and even SKS mounts, and the plate they use. There should be no reason why attaching that plate to the left side of the receiver, and then using Russian side mounts (or optics) shouldn't work. Anyways, I'm willing to invest a couple hundred bucks to see how smart I think I am:D .

I'm thinking I'll order the Universal side rail from Kalinka Optics, and the AA battery version of the Kobra red dot for it.

PS - Thanks for showing me the Kalinka website Kasam.

I'll try and see if CanadaAmmo can get the Russian side mount AA battery version of the Kobra red dot - other wise I'll order from Kalinka (I'd love to use the local guy - but I'd rather have optics that run off of AAs rather than lithiums if I can).

The battery life on the Kobra sights is quite long, I would buy the Kobra in country (its cheaper up here) and make do with the lithium cells. Should get a couple years easy off the lithium cell battery... with normal range use.

The other issue is, that I'd have to buy seperate mounting hardware if Canada Ammo only has the Weaver mount scope. The bracket alone is about $50.00 US, which factors in to my cost.

The AA version is already side mountable on its own.

I have a mount and rails in the mail at present. The problem with a lot of the AK mounts is that they are often offset forward putting the optics in the way of the ejecting cases, at least that's how it appears. I don't think this would be a problem with AK's as they don't eject their spent cases in the same direction as the 858. Another slight problem is that when fitting the rail in the ideal place for the mount, is that it's likely that the pins that protrude through the reciever will be covered. It will be a pain to work on the reciever internals at a later date if the rail is not modified in advance of fitting. I also have my doubts that the reciever is thick enough to be tapped for threads, I think it will either have to be riveted on, or the rail it's self drilled and tapped and the secured form the inside of the reciever.

I'm sure it can be done one way or the other, where there's a will there's a way.

A NEW option to mount a red dot on your CZ858 or VZ58.

This is an email I sent to a company called Scout Scopes (currently Marstar is carrying their SKS mount). It is a mount that replaces the rear sight, and probably sits in a better spot on the VZ than the AK side mount. The catch is that they currently do not make a mount for the CZ-858 - VZ58. But there is promising news on the horizon. I received this email from www.scoutscopes.com:

(I asked whether the AK or SKS mount would fit a VZ58)

Their response:

Well, yes and no. Neither our AK or SKS mount will attach to your
rifle, but we finished the first production run of mounts for the VZ58 a
couple weeks ago.

We are testing them as we speak and if all goes well will have them for
sale in a couple months.

Please check back with us soon.

Thank you,
ScoutScopes.com

If we're lucky, this product will be out to market soon, and represent a dedicated mount for our rifles. I was going to go with an AK side mount, and all of the hassle that entails. But, I will wait for this company to deliver - and I will check back with them regularly when it will be for sale. (Check out their website....I like where this mount would place a red dot) Anways - I hope this is for real, and not just a waste of time waiting - but seeing as its -31C today in Saskatoon (feelslike -45C with the windchill) I don't think I'll be visiting the range any time soon.

Interesting. I have kind of a hard time justifying a $99 scope mount for an SKS, but I'd definitely consider it for my vz.58.

Drill and tap the rail for 10-32 and then screw from inside the reciever into the rail. Use the hardened button cap allen screws and this will be one strong unit. The VZ58 reciever is milled is it not? If so it should be thick enough to tap...

Same as an AK mag I suppose.

Turn upsidedown, push in little button looking thing down, and slide base plate forwards. everything falls out.

Depending how and if it's pinned.
The rivit type pin will make the spring and follower a ##### to pull out.
Sometime people pin them by sticking something into to bottom and glueing the base plate.
