Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

OK, how the hell do I get the buttstock of my 858? So far in trying to take it off I have managed to destroy 1 large screwdriver and put a very large crack/hole in the stock (hope that folder gets here soon)! Is there a trick to it? Is it left hand thread or what? :mad:
 
acually the first time u take it off its a bugger. i used a tire iron and filed it down a bit on the slot end.give it alot of pressure and turn that sucker. clean the threads after!

Wait a minute, is that 'rail' I see attached to the receiver's side?
Palinak, will you be getting something like that? I think that would be pretty good, for attaching long scopes and such.

I think it's the railed foregrip you can see in many other pics on this thread, with 4 rails (top, bottom, 2 sides). I don't think it has rails mounted on the receiver, at least that's the way I see it in that pic:confused:
You don't need a rail longer than 4"-5" to hold almost any of today's modern scopes, you know:ar15:
 
That side rail is mounted on a Sa vz.58 "Pi"
The Pi models had AK style side mounts for night vision. The rail is attached to that AK side mount. You would have to tap and drill your receiver for a AK side mount for that rail to work.
I have a different system in the works for long scopes.

While the scene is supposed to be in the Ukraine, and the movie shows AKs throughout, these are 58s IMHO. First, the film was filmed in Czech Republic, South Africa and the US. Second, look at the angle of the fixed stocks. The roundedness indicates 58 as the AK stock is more straight.

Next, look closer...

Again we have a curved buttstock, a curved pistol grip and there is a space in front of the trigger guard. On an AK, that is for the magazine release. See?

You are correct Decard ...those are all 58s :dancingbanana:

Also a good giveaway it isn’t Ukraine is the Czech Tatra 8x8 in the back
Only the Czech and Slovakian army uses those.

BTW the most significant for me was a piece of iron for bayonet at muzzle of barrels.

Side rail

there is removable picatinny 1913 rail on the side rail /AK style/ from Sa vz. 58 Pi on the picture from 601st special etc. webpage.

Although every closeup of a rifle shows an AK (there are lots of those kicking around in the Czech republic too), the racks in that particular scene are of VZ58's. I wonder if that was staed, or if they really are stored in those leaky humid bunkers over there - seems like they would rust fast stored like that, no?

Maybe.. but they are painted inside and out. I'm sure they're also greased up good too. Then again, in a big budget hollywood movie, I'm sure they could also afford to pay some poor Czech guy $20 to stack all those 58s all day long.
