VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

    Votes: 1,507 70.4%
  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

    Votes: 407 19.0%
  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

    Votes: 166 7.7%
  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

I have now read the entire thread. That took me a friggin' long time.
In any case, I have a few questions, pertaining to this picture!

What are the tactical advantages of the helmet on the far right? How come you never see units equipped with them, and more of the "Spectra Helmet" style gear?

They wore helmets like this in a video game called Metal Gear Solid, but I never understood the advantages and disadvantages. Is that a radio piece or something? Is it an "extended ear" system for amplifying quiet sounds? Help!

I wasn’t getting closer, I was out in the sticks with my guessing, but thanks for the credit. I should have recognized the pattern of the mag. I could blame the light, which makes hard to approximate the width of the mag, but I don’t. I’m getting rusty.

Anyway, it’s hard to match a bolt carrier (with a given length of the piston rod) with a barrel that has the gas block at another position.
In the 90’s there was a fashion pattern in US, something like “let’s build an AK from pieces”. And that is happening when they don’t match. (Today they play the social game “let’s build an AK104 from a Saiga”. I still have to see some results)

I don’t consider that pic a “bubba” job. Everybody with his own.
It would be interesting to see what he used and from where, since AK can’t interchange almost nothing with Dragunov, not even with Romanian replica of Dragunov (civilian version sold in US as Romak 3), whose action is basically an AK on steroids.

Thanks for the links.
PS Nice banana. The middle fingers can be a little bigger, though.

There was a club competition in CZ.
Some of you young bucks with fast computers and everything, stop monkeying around and see if you can find some 58 pics in this:

Steal the friggin pics (he has too many anyway) and post them in here.

I wish I could help, but I know nothing about helmets either czech or others.

Regarding the barrel thread, I heard that ONLY SOME of the barrels from the 58's in Canada are threaded.
