Weatherby vanguard S2

Except even factory ammo tends to be slower from a Tikka than other rifles of same barrel length. This has been pretty well documented by shooting over chrony. Googling "Tikka slow barrels" brings up a lot of interesting reading on it.

Maybe it isn't always the case...but it does seem pretty regular.

I have owned four Tikka rifles, and I have loaded for several more, and in each case, they produced similar velocities to other brands with the same barrel length. I develop a load for each rifle, so in some cases the Tikka load may have been a grain more ro achieve the same pressure/velocity, but the potential was still similar.

Good! If the cause is throat length, it makes sense that it will be more apparent in some calibers than others.

Reading some of those links, the issue seems to be lower than posted velocity with factory loads, and with load data. My own findings are that very few factory loads actually produce the published velocity in any rifle. The same with load data, particularly Nosler data, that is often 100-150fps optimistic. As I posted, I can usually reach the published numbers, but I have to add powder, and that is with most factory rifles, not just Tikka. And since I don't use factory loads, I really don't care, I usually only chronograph factory loads for friends that use it.

Ah, but that does not account for the same load (factory or otherwise) shooting slow in the Tikka and not other rifles. Which is also a documented thing.

Otherwise the answer in all of those threads would be the obvious conclusion you just came to.

No one is disputing that your Tikkas do not reflect this. That's great. But maybe they don't have particularly more freebore than the SAAMI norm.

Again, the statement isn't "all Tikkas will do this" but that there is clearly a trend. They tend to.

do you know what the twist rate was for that vintage
Interesting that in some chamberings the Howa is a faster twist than the VanguardII

HI Boxhitch - The Wby was a 1:10 twist rate. It would shoot 100 gr bullets, but keyhole 105s! So close but so far.

Took a trip to the camp yesterday and borrowed 2 rifles from a couple friends. A X-bolt and a Weatherby vanguard S2. Very impressed with the Weatherby S2. Chambered in 308 and it shot consistent 3/4 inch 3 shot groups with cheapo federal PowerShok 180s. Phenomenal trigger on the S2 as well. Definitely on the hunt for a S2 now.

Just picked up a S2 in 300 Wby on the weekend. I’ve had T3’s in the past, so was time to switch it up and give a Weatherby a go.

26” w/Brake, so it ticked off my earlier concerns in this thread. It came snuggled in a B&C and it weighed in at 7.6Lbs with a Leupold 0MOA Pic Rail attached.

Currently deciding whether it’s going to be a Bushy Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 or Leupold FX II 4-33 fixed (maybe a FX III 6x). I might be able to shave a few Oz off depending on which mounts I use (DNZ and Talley Lows respectively. So.. maybe 8.2-4Lbs all in?

Ordered a S2 in 30-06 today, now to decide on scope options. Picking up Talley lightweight mounts. Hopefully break it in within a week or so and see what sort of accuracy we can get out of it.
